Outlook express problems
We received emails from a friend in England this morning that give us "An error has occured on the script on this page." They ask if you want to continue running scripts on this page? It doesn't matter if we say yes or no or try to delete the email the only way out of it is control, alt, delete. There aren't any viruses associated with the emails. She has an Apple and we have a PC, but we've traded emails for years. We still have Windows XP and are using Outlook Express. Does anyone know if there is a way to delete these emails or do we just have to change operating systems?

It's been a while since I used OE, but I think there may be a way to tell OE to not preview the emails. If you can turn preview off, then they shouldn't lock your machine and you should be able to delete them.
It sounds like she sent you something that was a webpage that had some sort of Java or ActiveX scripting in the page. |
Also, just because there's no virus/trojan/malware in the email itself, doesn't mean that where the script is trying to take you may not have something going on.
Here, one of these might do the trick. Disable your Preview Pane How to Disable the Preview Pane in Windows Mail or Outlook Express - About Email |
Yeah what Steve said.
Turn the preview pane off or set your OE to display plain text only, not to parse HTML formatting. Last year there was a trojan out there that was stealing stored user/pass's from FTP clients then inserting redirect scripts into all index pages on the sites it stole access to. So after infection when people would visit the page they get the redirect script. They almost always did the same thing, hung the machine. |
If you haven't been exposed yet, try out a free web based email client like gmail.
You will love it, especially if you use multiple computers or travel. |
You guys are the greatest! Thank you very much. I was able to delete the messages. Mrs. PWD
