Tell me about Tuscan

I am looking to put Virginia in my rear view mirror. I have been doing some research and thinking the Tuscan area fits my bill.
I have read all the "Come here we are a great place" stuff, but now I would like to hear from the horses mouth.
Whats the deal?
Move?
Avoid?
Stay the he!! out we don't want your kind here?

masraum 01-14-2010 04:44 AM

Initially, I was thinking, holy crap, moving from Virginia to Italy, wow, that's cool.

Tuscan region (Tuscany)

Then I realized that you were talking about Arizona ;)

Tuscon
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...ndTusconAZ.JPG

All things considered, I think I'd adjust and try to get to Itally, the picture looks a lot more inviting.

Gogar 01-14-2010 07:16 AM

My parents live in Tuscon, up on the hill in the back of that pic. It's really nice, if you have somewhere else to go from May-September.

lukeh 01-14-2010 07:52 AM

I'll get back to you.

I leave for Tucson in 48 hours for a week long golf trip. ;)

Pazuzu 01-14-2010 07:58 AM

Lived there for years, and when the time is right, I'll go back there to live the rest of my life. I think it's the greatest place I've ever been.

Many people agree. Many do not. When I moved there in 1998, the consensus was that for every 3 people that moved there, 2 moved out, and it was a 50/50 shot if you stayed past 12 months. you either click with the place or not, and if you don't click, you'll hate it.

The weather, the landscape, the lifestyle, the driving, the politics...it's all a bit different. I don't think any place else has quite the same feel (it's different than anywhere else in AZ, and AZ is different than anywhere else in the US).

LakeCleElum 01-14-2010 08:27 AM

I was in Europe for 3 weeks last summer and and stayed 4 days in the Tuscan area....About an hour south of Pisa.....Great to visit, dunno if I could live there? I'll find pictures....

creaturecat 01-14-2010 08:47 AM

I would live in Tuscany.
Bit expensive compared to most of Italy. Great food and wine.

ODDJOB UNO 01-14-2010 09:16 AM

great place and still has small town feel.

Joeaksa 01-14-2010 11:29 AM

Tucson is much more of a small town city than Phoenix and IMHO a lot nicer city. If I had a choice would move to Tucson in a heartbeat.

My two sisters have lived there for years and love it.

nostatic 01-14-2010 11:36 AM

You gotta like the desert. Not everyone does. I've traveled through Tucson a couple of times in the last month or two, and will be making a bunch more trips. I like high desert, so Tucson is familiar to me.

Joeaksa 01-14-2010 11:44 AM

Forgot to mention, Tucson has temps 5-6 degrees cooler than Phoenix year around, and usually gets a bit more rain and weather. All in all it makes it more of a "four seasons" town than Phoenix.

You can drive to Mt. Lemon and ski in the morning, then return home and play 18 holes of golf in shorts on almost any winter day in Tucson. As Todd mentioned, if you like the desert its hard to not like Tucson.

So it's only 115F in the summer, then ;)

VINMAN 01-14-2010 11:55 AM

Joe, a buddy of mine lived out there a while back. He was telling me about some really effed-up bar he used to go to. Total deviant filled dive. Was some famous place or something. You know the one he was talking about?

In Tucson?

The Meet Rack. The owner's name has been changed to God, and if you're a first timer, you get invited into the Secret Room...which might make you think they were deviants.

Only for 3 hours. It's 80 in the morning, 110 at 1pm, then 80 at 8pm. No daylight savings, so the sun sets early in the summer. Once it's gone, the whole town wakes up and goes out to eat/movies/bars/whatever.

Sitting on a patio bar in the evening, with a stiff dry desert wind blowing through, and watching the monsoon storms roll over the mountain range, hammering it with more lightning that you've ever seen...yeah, that's livin' right there.

Sounds good.

But not nearly as good as 85° and 95% humidity at 8am, 95°and 95% humidity by 10am until 5pm and then slowly back down to 85° over night, but the humidity going up to 100%.

That's heaven fellas!

Why do ya think I moved here! It wasn't for the tripled paycheck, hell no! It was for the lovely swamp atmosphere...

MT930 01-14-2010 01:25 PM

My Mom's family has lived there for years, since the early 60's, Aunt still does. Great town it's grown a lot since my first visits in the early 70's as a kid.

Lots to do, great food, best Mexican. Lots of old people on the north-side, great weather, Catalina mountains are beautiful. Very populated very warm in the summer pretty & dry. Great Aviation town, excellent roads.

It would be my #1 pick for December to April 2nd home. I would have to live on the outskirts of town to escape the population density. Great place to own and drive the P-car.

Vinny and Pazuzu,

The name of the original place was "Someplace Else." Around for years then in the mid-1980's then it was closed for homosexual activities. Whoa... no, not what you are thinking. I almost lived at that place as it was a real scuz bag bar and any pilot who showed up got a free drink.

The homosexual activity was one night a regular couple came in and lo and behold the wife of the guy had gotten a boob job done. Well now, everyone had to see this so she pulled up her top and showed everyone her nice new titties. One of us mentioned "I would give a buck to feel those" and the line soon formed. Somewhere in the line was a girl who was goaded into doing it by her boyfriend. She got there, felt them and sat down.

Unfortunately in a back corner was a AZ State Alky agent and the next day there was a padlock on the bar for illegal homosexual activities. It opened back up for a while but was never the same.

The owner is Jimmy Anderson and he has a license plate with "God" on the front of his car, and diamond rings saying the same thing that he wears. Jimmy is "different" but a good guy. The "secret room" is what the old "Duty Hut" was at the first place. All sorts of sexual devices in there including a 1950's "put a dime in the slot" grocery store horse. Only difference is that there is a 10" dildo sticking out of the saddle. Then there is the "wheel of fortune" that is a 8 foot round wheel that rotates on the wall. The ladies can be strapped on the wheel and inverted so as Jimmy says, you can "eat them like an ice cream cone!"

Funny story. Jimmy used to give tours of the Duty Hut in the old days. One night he had a group of Univ. of AZ freshmen coeds come in. They had heard of the Duty Hut and wanted to look at it. Jimmy took them in that direction.

One of the other regulars in the bar that night was a cute little blonde named Kimmy. I looked at Kimmy and she looked back and I said "too bad they do not see how the duty hut is really supposed to be used." She agreed and we headed back to a side door. The girls were in the front part of the area and Kim and I headed to the back where they had a Gyno chair, stirrups and all. I sat down on the chair and Kim unzipped my pants and proceeded to do a bit of lower cranial massage. She gave good head BTW. This group of 18 year old coeds came around the corner with Jimmy leading. He did not miss a beat and said "here is Kim and Joe showing you how we do it in Someplace Else!" Did not pay for a drink the rest of the night!

Miss that place!

Because you can. Like how I rode my motorcycle today with a light jacket and then retired to sitting by the pool drinking a margarita, smoking a cigar.

Knowing that 80% of the rest of N. America is freezing makes it even that much nicer!

ODDJOB UNO 01-14-2010 02:26 PM

"GOD" jim anderson used to sponsor us DEZERT RACING! that is were we LIVED!
i lived on fremont st where the law college is now in a dilapidated dump of a house with 4 other guys .

tucson back then WAS a WILD AND WOOLY TOWN!

cant count how many times we crawled out of someplace else.

remember the only thing ya got with yer burger(jims brand on it) was worchestshire sauce. no mustard/no catshup.

thats 30 some odd years ago. there was a picture of "GOD" standing next to a semi truck full of what appeared to be the "DEMON WEED" and jim with a POO eating grin on his face. crazy sheet there. i was there when he bought TONS of billboard space with his likness when he ran for mayor.

used to see him all over town with his "GOD" cane and his cape on with short shorts and a wifebeater shirt on, running.

what a NUTCASE! proud to be his friend! HELL OF A GUY! and his wife was damn good looking! she drove the mercedes with the "GOD" head on the front hood.

This really sums it up for me.

I lived near UA and went to UA & Pima CC.

OLD PUEBLO life style dominates.

Many retired military.

Felt suffocated and moved to Oro Valley, then Phoenix, now further north.

Hmm, I have a different opinion of Tucson. The streets and freeway (yes, one freeway) are 40 years behind. Good luck getting through that mess on a regular basis. A fine place to visit (and I do, damn near monthly) but I'll wait till they enter the 80's with their traffic before I relocate.

I swear LA is better off in that category. Ok, that was a joke but you get my drift.

Would ya believe that I saw him on a regular basis at 7am, with a bunch of his regulars, jogging? Apparently he had a...medical scare...and a bunch of them got into being healthier...whouda thunk it?
I would see them in the morning if I went to work on campus early.

I've never heard anything but good stories about him, just like all of the crazy Tucson characters. Everyone of them loves that city and everyone in it. That's part of Tucson's charm, it's the smallest big city on Earth...apparently no one realizes that it's no longer a rusty dusty 100,000 person town.

So, is traffic an issue? How about the roads in the mountains? Good for exercising a Porsche or sportbike?

just got back. did some "exploring" in the desert. we sustained ourselves on some very random food. most of it from cans. 22 degrees at night and when the sun went down. 70's midday. hard to dress for hard hiking like that. we carried relatively large backpacks for holding clothing as they came off and on. one day, we NEEDED to do laundry, take a shower, and eat some real food. we found the craziest folks at the laundry mat. mullet city! the shower? we bribed a sleazy hotel manager with a $20 to let us three take a shower. felt great! then ate a a real restuarant, full of hot college women. everyone was very nice!! the city looks run down, and old. lots of chain restaurants. i could live there if i was very old. a nice "green" home nestled in the cactus, all solar powered seems kinda nice.

Joeaksa 01-15-2010 05:41 PM

Mike,

Jimmy used to have his own "group of regulars" and they would do anything for him. Jogging in the morning was part of the routine. You could see them all over town.

Your comment about "the smallest big city" is spot on!

Rufblackbird 01-16-2010 06:13 PM

my g/f and I may be heading down there soon, to check out both Tucson and the Phoenix area...hope to meet some of ya'll there :)

I believe the term you are looking for is "groupie."

God i love groupies. :D

this is the first thing I thought when I saw the title of this thread, like the car Travolta was rollin' in "Swordfish". Interesting, the Speed 6 has heads and valvetrain similar to a Suzuki GSX R750 because the same guy designed them both, the internet is such an amazing thing
