Better Steel Your Heart

To live into really old age you better steel your heart to the fact that everything and everyone will go away in the end.

Last night I was watching a program on The alive and well Choir of old folks who did renditions of RR and R&B songs. During the filming 2 of its members passed away suddenly both were in their 80's. The film maker asked a question of the oldest lady in the Choir who was 92. Before she even answered the question I knew what her answere would be, I could tell from the look in her eyes. The question was does it make you sad that these 2 members of the Choir had passed. Her answer was, "NO" It is not that it makes you sad, because it does, it is just that you realize that everyone will go away in the end.

Cheer up, Theodore.

You're referring to Young at Heart , which was a great doc, and really altered the context of many of those songs.

Don't tell Tabs. He's just finding that out now. I wonder how old he was when he found out about The Great Santa Clause Hoax Conspiracy?

I have largely lost my sense of goodwill towards members of this Board..I maybe your guiding hand but don't ask me what I think of you. I might not give you the answer you want me to.

my grandfather told me that he thought life was sometimes too long..he had to watch his own son (my dad) die. wasnt easy for him.

to check out in the 80 or 90's would be nice...if i was healthy. those choir guys were still living it up. good for them.

Better steel your heart there, Tabby. I'm pretty sure nobody cares enough of what you think of them to ask. Cool tune, though.

Tabs this is one thing that you are never warned about when you are a kid. Getting old means going to a lot of funerals.

Only other option is not a good one IMHO. Bring a good cigar and stop by the bar on the way home...

Why Tabs, that is twice in one day that you have aknowledged that you have feelings. We aren't used to that.

If You get old enough, the pain of loss sometimes gets replaced with the joy of reverie. And if you feel bad enough, death does tend to lose it's sting.

With all it's sham and drudgery, it is still a beautiful world.

So lighten up Francis.

The 1st funeral I went to was my Uncles on my 12th B day...so I bin to lots of funerals...

Uncle was killed in his Maseratti..he stopped because it wasn't running right..probably to tweek the carbs and someone hit hit him from the rear while he was under the hood and that was it for him at 48. If he had lived he probably would have become the CEO of 3M, as the CEO and Board of Directors came to his funeral. At the time he was the Director of 3 3M plants in the Detroit area and had as my Aunt said just invented something "Very Stickey" as in a adhesive.

The comment doesn't have to do with the loss or grieving but that specail quality of being able to asorb the loss and that is the quality that it takes to grow really old. So many people will lose someone and the grief overwhelms and that is it for them...do you know how many times I have seen that happen?
