want to move somewhere warm

some of you may recall my thread about moving to hilo. there was some great advice and information given. in the end, i did talk to a hospital there and found that they would be paying me a bit less than i am making already, with a lot more expenses.

so, again, i go to the pelican brain trust for opinions and information.

i want to be somewhere warmer than slc, utah.
on the coast or gulf would be nice.
i'd like to live in a city, 150,000 people or more would be nice.
california is not an option.

some places that have crossed my mind as options:

corpus christi, tx
savannah, ga
san antonio, tx
austin, tx
shreveport, la

let me have it!

actually last week i think you might have been better off in SLC
it was 18degrees in parts of LA,MS, and AL. for the last 3-4weeks the left coast was the onlyplace to be. all three states were above normal.

dont forget they have 90%+ humidity in most of those places and that the gulf is under huricane watch 4-6months of the year.

Austin really is amazing. If I could find a job there I would move in a heartbeat.

Two I would automatically drop are Corpus Christi; hot and humid in the summer and the salt air rusts the crap out of everything. And San Antonio, unless of course you happen to speak Spanish.

i knew humidity was going to come up. we'll adapt. i lived in kentucky and spent awhile in missouri, so i can handle it.

is the salt in the air worse than the salt on the roads, here, in the winter?

I did not read you provious post in detail, but saw your career is respiratory therapy.

Phoenix and the southwest AZ is the home of Valley Fever.
Hundreds of Thousands of seniors in the Sun Cities areas.
We have a Mayo Hospital and a couple other big hospital chains.

Homes are 1/3 to 1/2 off the peak prices.

Wages may not be equal to SLC but my taxes, car repairs, food, clothing and other living expenses are cheap. You can bike year round.

Many OK neighborhoods. Airport has BA nonstop to London. Southwest keeps fares low.
If you need a "chill" fix, drive 2 hours to Flagstaff.

Austin isn't too bad, I wound up moving back here after 3 1/2 years in DFW. Traffic is miserable, the politics even worse. It's 200 miles to the coast. The cedar can get really bad, keep that in mind if you or anyone in your family has allergies. They say after living here for about 7 years, you develop allergies, but after having lived here for 12 years once before, I never did.

Depending on your pace of life, you have two choices, north of the Colorado river or south. IHMO, the the south part of town is more laid back, old school, and friendlier. The dirt to the west is expensive, to the east reasonable. East Austin is little Mexico south of the river and ghetto north.

There's a little bit of something for everyone. Of course, my interpretation of Austin is going to differ from someone who has spent their whole life here, or someone who has just visited. I'm a 2nd time transplant from DFW who thinks it's a livable place.

Have you been to all of the places on your list?

I'm less than a week from returning from Hawaii. Oaho: Maui and North Shore, Hawaii: Hilo and Kona, Kauai...
It's the first warm climate I've ever visited in the dead of the midwestern winter that I was almost instantly certain that I NEVER EVER wanted to live.
Loved the place, beautiful, but much of the drawbacks presented by other posters in your previous thread were immediately obvious, but I'll concede, Hilo was nice because of the sparse population and RELATIVELY few cars!!!

I understand very keenly your desire for warmer climates, especially now, but it's amazing how perspectives differ, I mean, Savannah??? Shreveport???
You must really be aching to escape the cold.

I'm really not being critical, on the contrary I'd actually like to understand more about what interests you in the southeast U.S., and why you WOULDN'T consider California....

I've spent a week in San Antonio once. I wouldn't want to move there. I've not been to Corpus, but it's on the coast, so it'd have to be better (I'm from the Gulf Coast of FL). Houston might also be a good option.

I don't think I'd want to go to Shreveport.

Austin is great, I love Austin. That's Texas' home for Fruits and Nuts (and also a big college town). It's cool.

The salt air on the Gulf Coast is worse than the salt on the roads. You can avoid the salt on the roads.

Austin is pretty sweet, but I bet as an RT you could get work in AZ, easier. Lots of oldsters, as mentioned, Coccidiomycosis(sp?) is endemic to the area.

Take a good look at Columbia (middle of the state), Greenville, & Spartanburg (in the upstate near the Smokies), South Carolina... Charleston is beautiful and fantastic insofar as restaurants and is a bit more expensive, but you can mitigate that by living and working further out... in Summerville or North Charleston... you could even snoop around on John's Island and find a decent place for a decent price.

Fixed that for you.

Seriously dude, California is pretty f'ed up in so many ways. I only came back here because I have family in Sacramento. The climate is nice, but there are lots of places with nice weather. I could give you a dozen reasons, any one of which would be a deal breaker. There is no way I would ever recommend anyone moving here unless they had to, and I love California.

And so do I. If you're smart, choose the location wisely, much of what folks complain about is a non factor.

The question stands.
