software install help please
Hi PPOT
I am trying to install my ms office on work PC but the cd does not want to read and the install will not proceed. I cannot even browse the CD without it hanging and going into not responding mode. I tried the CD in my laptop and it seems fine, which leads me to believe it is the hardware on the work PC that is letting me down. Was thinking about buying a USB writer and installing from there but wondered if I can hook the laptop up with a LAN or even to the router and set it to share mode and install office on the work pc from the laptop. Is this possible with relative ease or is another drive a better plan? Thanks for any tips & the help! Reg

It's a pain, but you can try copying the entire CD to a temp directory on the pc and see if it will install. If it does not hang...
If you can network the two computers together, you could share the laptop optical drive and install over the network. All you really need is a cross over cable directly connected to each computer and give them both unique I.P. addresses...

I'm not sure about 32 or 64 bit. It is office2003 pro on a p4 3.0 with win xp.
How do we assign ip's to each computer, in laymans terms please! Can it simply be a cable running from the one pc into the router - unplugged from the router and into the laptop? Thanks ![]() Reg

If you already have a router, then all you need to do if have both computers plugged into it and it should assign I.P.'s automatically. If you do not have a router, the cheapest thing to do, is to buy (or make) a cross over cable. They are different than regular network cables.
More than likely, you are running a 32 bit OS. Instead of writing how to assign an I.P. address, here's a link.. http://hubpages.com/hub/How-to-Configure-IP-Address-on-Windows-XP If you go the cross over route, you only need to worry about assigning an I.P. address to each computer, do not worry about DNS or Gateways.

Dave is correct but if that does not work also you might try putting in into the laptop, copying it to a USB drive then plugging the USB drive into the desktop and going from there.

Thanks for the help. I have installed it now. The office program was mainly installed to run outlook. The PC came with 2007 trial installed and after installing 2003 it will not run - some dll error. argggh!! So it says to reinstall it so what I am in the process of doing is uninstalling all office and then reinstalling just 2003. I hope this will work. PITA makes me wish I shelled out more $$ and just got the 2007 version.
