Phoenix/Maricopa Area Real Estate

I'm thinking about property in/around Phoenix.

My Zillow search flagged some interesting pricing down around Maricopa, south of Phoenix proper.

I love Scottsdale -what's the scoop on Maricopa? Liveable as a winter get-away?

Any other areas to consider?

Ten years ago Maricopa was a little rural farming town. Then the Real Estate boom transformed it into a huge bedroom community. After the bust, many unfinished homes and dirt lots. Not a very good commute into Phoenix and it is nothing like Scottsdale.

Maricopa is great if you like a crappy commute and living amongst govt funded, relocated Katrina victims.

Maricopa's great, 2 minutes outside of "town" there are great valleys in which to go shooting.

Lol - buncha nails hit right on the head there Rika, amazing actually. So I guess I'm disqualified on all counts. Not sure I "get" the other references though.

Alright - I've stayed at the Fairmont Scottsdale often - love it and the area, but probably out of my snack bracket for a third house. Any other Phoenix areas you'd recommend I snoop around in? Small house/condo/townhouse sub $250k would be perfect.

I can think of few places worse to buy than in Maricopa. It's far from everything, smells like cow sheet and has no hope for appreciation. It's a basket case. There are lots of good deals to be had in nice parts of the Phoenix area.

Sub-$250k will get you a decent condo in Scottsdale, but the monthly dues (and random assesments) can be a hard pill to swallow. Figure an extra $200-$300 every month (and higher in some cases). If you don't need a lot of "bells & whistles" you can find nice, smaller, single-family homes in decent areas for $250k +/-. If you want anything larger than 1800 sqft, or a pool or a 3-car garage, your choices dwindle very rapidly. As far as other places to scout, I would personally look in the NE/N/NW parts of the valley. N. Peoria, N. Glendale, N. Phoenix, Cave Creek, Carefree, Scottsdale, Fountain Hills, etc.

If you are looking South of Phoenix, you might consider Ahwatukee, Gilbert, Chandler, etc.

Just for grins, I ran a quick search on SFR's & condos under $260k in the NE Valley:

Condos to paruse.

SFR's to paruse.

Nicer area is Wickenburg, Payson, Prescott...

Live in North Phoenix but will move out in the stix shortly. Agree with Ricks comments on Maricopa.

Does it have ANY neighbours with walls anywhere near the property?
