Bad sound driver?

I have a 5 yr old Dell desktop and for the past year or so, any sound that comes out of my speakers is all broken up and not flowing right. Think maybe I need to reload a sound driver on the computer? If so, how? Any other suggestions? theories?
I tried uninstalling Windows Media Player and reinstalling it, but it still happens. And it's not just music that does it... it's any sound from the computer... even the little windows chime/jingle thing when you first start the computer.

try listening with headphones or external speakers plugged into the headphone jack. if ok, your on-board speakers are probably blown

i think i fixed it. i went to Dell.com and download the driver again and installed it. It seems to be working ok now.
