Stuck Rover?!?

Yup, I got my Rover stuck. I was flying (~35mph) down the dirt road leading to the range I shoot at and drifted into the ditch on the side of the road. It's been raining a lot so parts of the road aren't exactly as they appear.

I was sunk in pretty good, the inclinometer was showing just shy of 45 degrees and mud was seeping in under the door. The guy following me in pulled ahead and started to rifle through his truck bed looking for a tow rope or chain. Being a little more prepared, I just jammed the pretty yellow knob down, pulled the red one towards me, angled my wheels appropriately and got the hell out of that ditch. Thankfully I already had my hubs locked.

Nicely done!
Now you need the bumper sticker " don't follow me.. you won't make it!"

To engage 4 low you do not need to push down the yellow knob, just pull back the red one.

Hmmm, I was never really sure about this because the haynes manual makes a point of telling you to never attempt to run the vehicle in 2wd low.

Consider yourself lucky!

The difference in 4WD and 2WD, you'll get stuck further off the road in 4WD!

When you push down the yellow button you are engaging 4hi. When you pull back the red lever you are disengaging 4hi and engaging 4lo. For instance, if you were to engage 4hi for a slippery road, but then determined that it was no longer necessary; you should pull back on the red lever, the yellow 4hi knob will pop up, then push is forward and you are back in 2hi. So whenever you pull back the red lever the yellow know is popping up, disengaging it. What the Haynes manual is referring to, is running in 4lo but with the front hubs unlocked. That would be a recipe for a broken rear axle. I am glad you made it out. Do you have any pics of your truck?

I love this old truck. It's definitely my favorite vehicle that I've owned. It always gets attention and it's a good way too force yourself to slow down every now and then.
