I'm Not Raising Rednecks, I'm Raising Hillbillies!!!
Last week we drove up to the Iowa farm. Over this past weekend the kids wanted to make a fort, or a tree house or something. We couldn't find a suitable tree. They decide that up in back by an old tin Quonset hut they wanted to build a fort so we got a bunch of lumber from the tin hut, some old plywood and anything else we could find. A few hours later they had their fort. My Son and I did the bull work, My Daughter helped with some of the bull work but she had the 'vision'. I present the 'Shanty'!!!
![]() Here is our little one riding up to her 'Shanty'. ![]() Later on after dinner they took their 4-wheelers up, decided they wanted to hang out on their 'shanty's" front porch where he would shoot birds for her barn cats. He actually did get a sparrow which the cat eat up pretty quickly. They make great hillbillies... ![]()

Lubester, who are you and how did you steal pictures of my childhood? Crossman 760 bb/pellet gun . . . the stuff that dreams are made of . . .
OK, I can do this. It's Iowa. The prairie is rolling, so it's not on the east near the Mississippe, and certainly not the northeast in the unglaciated region. It's too rolling to be central Iowa and it's not dry and flat enough to be south on the Missouri border. I'm thinking north west Iowa, maybe near Spirit Lake? I know you've told us before, but I can't remember.

I should find the big ugly fort my Dad made for us kids. Good thing there wasn't a HOA!!!!!!!!!!!!111111oneoneoneshiftshift!!!
Thing was made from a welded aluminum frame, had multiple sections, had a second floor, whole thing draped double in old camo netting that wasn't totally rotted. About 30' 30' probably. Mom eventually said it had to go, so it went from near the house to out deep into the woods. Next time I'm over at my parent's, and have time I'll have to revisit and see how it looks. This thread reminded me of it, thanks. ^^

Pretty smart "barn cat"...knowing exactly where he wanted to be...on a little girl's lap! Kudos, Mike...enjoy.

I like the way the four-wheelers can back up to the porch, good for a fast getaway.

In between Omaha and Sioux City - no Banjo but he and his sis do play piano. The cat that got the bird is the bigger yellow one on the ground, she is holding a kittin in her lap - she named that one Lemon Drop. She only gets about 10 kittens a year to name! Those barn cats are the most docile things in the world.
As for the farm, 2700 acres of corn and soy beans - here is a pic of the 'hoop barn'. The machine sheds are not big enough for the combine and corn and bean heads.
