Advice: Next Door Neighbor's Viscious Dog

My next door neighbor is a police officer who in the last year bought a German Shephard. He has been training it to guard his house because I suspect he feels threatened by some of the amigo's he has testified against in court. He stakes out train robbers for Union Pacific Railroad and busts the bad guys all the time.

Anyway- His dog reminds me of a salivating Alien from the movie "Aliens" on the otherside of the fence when I walk by to empty my trash at the side of my house or just passing by, It looks and growls and rams the fense in a frenzy of aggression. It is apparent it would love to chew on me.

Approximatly, 6 months ago my neighbor was in his garage and his dog was out in the front of his house. I came home with my son and we began unloading and carrying in a large speaker box when this tyrannysaurus of a dog came out of know where and began growling and snapping at me while I was carrying the speaker. I yelled at the top of my lungs to my neighbor to get his damn dog away and he did.

A week or so later, the dog ran over and growled and barked at my wife while she was in our front yard and forced her in the house.

Then a couple months ago the dog came after my golden retriever when my wife was walking it on the front sidewalk and when she screamed, my neighbor called his dog off again.

My wife and I kindly told him that his dog is a problem and he needs to do something about it.

A few more episodes passed of it being loose and barking at me and my wife then-

Last Thursday, my wife was walking out to our car with my dog to pick my son up from school and my neighbors dog ran over and attacked my dog and bit her in the neck. My wife ran back to the house screaming with our dog and it chased her up to the front door. I immediately responded and ran out after it aggressively, so my wife could get inside the house.

I looked at it in the eye and screamed at it as loud as I could to try to scare it...I actually thought it was going to pounce on me too, so I ran inside. I ran around the back of the house and yelled at my neighbor with some profanity to get his forking dog off my front porch before it eats a 45 round.

I was pissed and so was my wife.

My dog received a few punctures wounds to the neck. Overnight, my dogs lymph nodes in here neck swelled to the size of hard boiled eggs. She was still bleeding and sick. We immediately took her to the vet and they placed drainage tubes coming out of her neck to drain the infection and gave us antibiotics to control the infection. they also put a cone/shroud on her neck so she cant disturb the tubes and is still notably distressed.

At the moment, we have about $300 bucks in vet bills. My wife talked to his wife and she said the dog was "just nipping no big deal" and she said she would have her husband come over and discuss the issue and the bill. Up till now, he hasnt bothered to show up.. He is going to try to just blow it off, I'm sure.

I want to be a good neighbor and sincerely try to understand why he has the beast to protect his family, but my wife and I are annoyed and done with it. The dog is truly a menace.

Part of me wants to tell him that I am afraid for the welfare of my family and dog and if it comes over in my yard in an aggressive manner I will indeed destroy his dog.

Any of you guys have a realistic idea of how to control this situation and get my money back. I dont want this to get out of hand because he is a cop and I will be the one in the clink..

Bob

Check with the local law, the dog obviosly has aggression issues and attacked ypour dog, if it was truely trained it wouldn't be acting that way.....
If it comes on your property shoot it, simple as that......I would've done that after the first incident......the fact that he's a cop means nothing if your loved ones are in danger....

And if it already attacked your dog I would surely contact animal control/the police and file a report....

You've tried being a good neighbor up to this point. Time to call the dog officer and file a complaint with documentation from the vet that he treated your dog for a bite wound to the neck.

What if it was your son or wife that had been bitten?

It's one thing for the dog to be trained to be a "watch dog" in the house. The dog is aggressive when in his yard and on YOUR property.

Get a report filed so that if something happens and you do whack it with a shovel, bat, something big, heavy and hard there is a history shown that your repeatedly complained and the neighbor did nothing. I am a dog lover, but this falls under self /family self protection and it doesn't sound like you have a choice.

Bell,

Its one of those things that happens so fast you really are more focused on an escape route for your wife, dog and self before you can muster up any type of counter attack.....

really...

Neighbor is a police officer.

Unfortunately, chances are nothing will come of this no matter what Bob does...

As a cop he should be more responsible. If he continues to ignore you tell his wife you're going down to the station and file a complaint with his CO. No one should be afraid on their own property from dog or man. With the complaint on file. Walk the yar with a bi stick and give that pooch a go home run whack when he comes charging. The dog will learn who's the alpha mofo.

I had a similar problem with a neighbor, but these were packing Pit Bulls. They attacked my
sleeping Cat right in front of me in my Garage. They collected the dogs before I could get my
gun out and stated they would pay the Vet Bill. Several months after they had received the
Vet Bill and still had not paid I made a visit. The Vet bill was +/- 300$. His response was I made
his Wife cry and he was not going to pay the bill. He stated to get off his property or he would
call the Sheriff, I did but got a visit anyway. He call the Sheriff all the time to make it look like I was the bad guy.
I took him to Small Claims Court twice and won. He refused to pay, it went to Civil Court where
the Judge thru the case out. His Dady is A LAWYER and I think he knows the Judge. The moral
to the story is shoot the damn dog and claim self defence. I ended up losing several thousand
dollars and a very loved cat.

Bob, don't wait for him to show up. Go over there with your wife and have the discussion. Be frank about the entire matter. Document everything...include a 3rd party witness. File a complaint with proper authorities. After that if the situation is still not handled then do it yourself...

Kill the dog, be done with it. Dogs will drink antifreeze.

First I'd be way past trying to be a good neighbor at this point.

I'd also be speaking with the rest of the block, I assume you are not the only one that has encountered the dog.

Right now I'd be on my way down to this guys precinct house and having a discussion with the highest guy up the food chain that I could find and explain to him exactly how reckless his officer is and as I left I'd make sure he knew my next stop was the local news stations.

Next stop is my attorney, don't care if it costs me a couple of hundred bucks but the guy is getting a letter from the shark outlining each incident and explaining how much emotional distress this is causing me and my family and that I am looking into my options for remedy. Oh yeah, cops boss gets a copy of it as well.

Next is a report on the bite incident filed with animal control.

And of course if the dog sets one foot on your property and so much as sneezes funny you're gonna put a bullet in it.

Be careful with the gun. In a case involving the LEO he may have enough pull to cause you quite a bit of problems. Read up on the law. A bat may provide you with more satisfaction.

Speak with him directly - Once. Follow that and all other communication through official documented channels be they a lawyer or through reporting incidents to the proper authorities (police, animal control, etc)

Report the bite incident with the proper authorities. He and his dog should have no more chances to harm your family.

You've got a volatile situation. The next victim of the dog could be a neighbor, your wife or you child.

Contact animal control at a minimum.

Make a big deal out of it. Tell him you'll call the SPCA, or even the local news.

German shepards can be extremely dangerous.
