Questions about "The Driver" w/ Ryan O'Neal & Bruce Dern

If you're a fan of car chases and film noir, you probably know this movie. As for car chases, I rank it up there with Bullit and Ronin. The noir isn't too bad, either; some very dark characters lurk in this, particularly Dern's "cop."

Anyway, evidently there are two versions of this film floating around. In one, nothing romantic happens between Isabelle Adjani and Ryan O'Neal, while in the second, they become romantically involved. Also, in this second version, the opening is different, and there is a pool hall scene with the kid who shows up toward the end as another getaway driver.

I've seen this second version only once -- it played as a fluke years ago on regular TV, but I have not seen it since. Incidentally, I thought the second version was better as it added at least a new dimension to O'Neal and Adjani, which lessened the stiffness of their characters.

So has anyone seen or heard of or know where I can find this second version? It must be a director's cut, although I don't know if Walter Hill ever released a director's cut. As is, I thought I'd see if anyone in PPOT knows of this before embarking on a wild internet goose chase.
