Sniper's little spoon project progress report
Sniper,
The hardened 4140 dovetail piece as well as the aluminum adapter plate are pretty much done. I still need to make 4 custom .120" locater pins and press them into the adapter plate and I also need to blacken the aluminum (will have to wait till Monday as the alumablack is still at work). I put it on (minus the pins) just to test fit and it looks pretty decent. Hope these pics will tide you over until I can ship it out next week. :D Aluminum bar stock and a piece of 4140 prehard. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1264809638.jpg After removing your rear sight and doing some measuring and sketching...time to start cutting the dovetail piece. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1264809754.jpg Fits nice and snug http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1264809785.jpg Next the aluminum is sized up and the holes centerdrilled. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1264809955.jpg Drilling done.... still need to put a radius on the ends of the aluminum (will have to take to work to do on CNC mill) and tap holes. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1264810192.jpg Time for a test fitting.... Perfect! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1264810265.jpg |
Muwaahahahaha YES BROTHER ! Do it up! :D
I knew i went to the right man!!! |
Hey bro can you make that mount waterproof, or at least water resistant? If not no biggie, i can make a gasket when i get it back.
|
cool!
|
Nice work!
|
Nice work, Tim. Nice gun, sniper.
|
Thanks Jeff, cannot wait to get it back and send it out to get ported.
|
Tim, once again your varied talents and skills amaze me. Nice work.

Well Sniper, the little project is done. The homemade "dowel pins" were pressed in place and they hold the optic perfectly. I spoke with a machinist from work and he claimed our Alumablack stuff at work is old and no good so I simply squirted the adapter plate with a shot of flat black paint.
I am embarrassed to say this little project took me about five hours to measure/design/build, but not to worry, I won't be charging you 5 hours of labor... I enjoyed tinkering with it and got to further polish my small job machining skills. ;):) (PM on the way) "Dowel pins" are cut from #31 drill bit and pressed into plate http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1264877533.jpg Screws are 5-40 thread and had to be ground to the proper length. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1264877669.jpg It all goes together nicely. Be careful not to over tighten the screws. I am still not too keen on the whole idea of dovetail mounting a red-dot on a pistol slide, but as you pointed out that is what the Burris designed for. I hope it works out for you long term. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1264877831.jpg |
Looks great man, thanks!
If it doesn't hold up long term i'll just get the existing sights drilled for tritium inserts(probably gonna do that anyway) and put the fastfire on my AR. :) Great job, thanks! |
I looked at a Heckler & Koch, Kimber, Wilson Combat(too expensive), bought Kimber, but I sure like that HK!
|
According to a Pelican you can get P7's online for under $600.00
If so- steal of the century! Tim, this red dot in the sight dovetail/riding on the slide trend is becoming increasingly common now. Many of the top open class shooters are using them. Look at this fking beast: http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b3...openpistol.jpg |
I can't wait to see the spoon all assembled with the new sight. :D

I snagged a P7 online with fewer than 1k rounds through it, box, accessories, 2 mags and TT holster for 650. Now I'm playing the waiting game until it gets to my local shop.

Awesome!

Did they make you wear a black ski mask? |
Not this time, but they did for the combat commander. I paid so little for it that its laughable.
I can't wait to get my hands on this gun! Probably not going to do anything crazy like a red dot sight, but I imagine a set of those nill grips are in the future. I'm about to start making a set for my 1911 out of drift wood I found on the beach that has a really nice texture. |
The beautiful part in the P7 is it doesn't need a trigger job or ambi this or extended that controls added. Just a set of grips, and night sights (i would get those if it's to be an actual defensive spoon), and you're golden.
I'm just getting the MFD mounted and getting it ported because i know i will have it forever, and i want the uberist P7 in all of HKdom. I've wanted one for 20 years. I chose this one over the M8 i had. I have my pistol. If you like yours even 1/2 as i like mine, you'll have yours forever too! :D |
Excellent!
|
Sniper, how are you going to conceal a P7 with such large optics on it? Or is this a range toy only? It looks like a cool project and I know P7's grow on trees at the moment. But I just couldn't bring myself to do this to one of them. They are no longer made and in a few years the supplies will dry up. Is this sight removable or interchangeable with something more low key? If I were gonna do something like this, I'd do it on a very cheap, replaceable gun.
|
They're not large optics. It will still be a carry spoon, it will still fit in all my holsters (i'll post pix when i get it back). It will also be my primary "when zombies attack!" side-spoon. If i ever get off comp (6 herniated discs!) it will be my repo spoon too.
There are no permanent modifications to the spoon from the MFD. I can put the old sights back on in about 10-15 minutes...if for some reason i don't want a day/night all-weather targeting system anymore. ;) The Mag-na-porting....not so much. I'm going to initiate an email exchange with HK and Mag-na-port to make sure the porting won't render the gas retardation system ineffective first. If i'm not convinced it will work properly, it's not getting done. After that it will go for a 2 tone NP3'd frame (probably the satin black they offer, with polished take down button and trigger) and mirror high polish blued slide. I'm not doing this for you, or to fit in with your sensibilities. I'm doing it for me, to fit in with mine....this spoon is what I've wanted since i saw Die Hard in about 1986. :) When it's done it should be quite awesome. And a lifetime keeper. Here's the Burris fastfire mounted on a bunch of other pistols. It does not make the pistol impractical. http://www.gun-one.com/M&P-with-Fastfire.jpg http://www.hunt101.com/data/500/medium/IMG_37321.JPG http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...IIFastFire.jpg http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...g?t=1264957322 |
How about this fully comped P17M13 race gun with frame mount optics and 25 rd extended magazine? (yes, you can order one--- for about $5,000.00!!! They'll do your PSP for about $3000...)

So, when is this little project going to be back together?
The seller backed out on my p7. I was pretty bummed then I stopped in a local gunshop and found a really clean p9s for dirt cheap. I can't wait to put some rounds through my new spoon. |
Tim shipped it back to me today, it should be here by thursday or friday. Trust me i will post pix. :D
Why don't you look for a P7 on CDNN? Rick said they're really cheap. You can get an A grade for about $650 i think he said. |
Having discussed this on a P7 forum, i've decided porting the P7 is a bad idea. The recoil spring is wrapped around the fixed barrel. This would expose it to direct exhaust gas under high pressure on every shot.
Not a good idea IMO. |
I was wondering about that. My local smith said it would be a bad idea for that reason on my P9S. I still haven't gotten out to shoot it, it'll probably be the usual Saturday morning range time before I do.

Take pix. :)
|
Quick pix of the new spoon, will take more when I put some lead through.
