nope. i am not talking about it popping up a new window, i am talking about the little ad windows that pop up when your pointer travels over the highlighted text. i did find the answer.

you edit the "hosts" file and add this line at the bottom:

127.0.0.1 bing.com

it requires a reboot.

*shrug*

Have you tried the Mozilla adblock plug-in? I use Google personally so I don't know, but it works for everything else.

bingo! thanks!!!

i hate bing, it sucks, the search engine sucks, the format of it sucks. blah blah blah.

I use NoScript - JavaScript/Java/Flash blocker for a safer Firefox experience! - what is it? - InformAction and ad-block.

Just curious but why use bing?

Where do you find this hosts file for IE8? Whenever I read MSNBC I despise those pop-up Bing ads.

nynor 01-31-2010 05:10 PM

do a search of your hard drive for the file "hosts", no extension. open it with notepad and add the line. save the file. reboot. it should work.

bing has embedded ads all over in web page content. the owners of the pages get paid for the ads. foxnews has them, ducati.ms has them, reuters has them. i think our local news has them. they are ubiquitous.

Por_sha911 01-31-2010 05:20 PM

OK, I found Hosts in several places but assumed it was the C:/ file to be changed. I added the line but it wouldn't save: it gave Save As with choices: .txt or All files *.*

nynor 01-31-2010 05:25 PM

you may have trouble overwriting the file because it is a system file. i have all that "safety" BS disable on my machine. i've been hacking stuff for years.

Por_sha911 01-31-2010 05:39 PM

I can probably edit it in Safe Mode.

Oh, I see. Rollovers.

nynor 01-31-2010 05:57 PM

exactly.

Por_sha911 01-31-2010 06:25 PM

Good news / Bad news
Good: Editing the Hosts file is as simple as running Notepad in Administrator mode.
Bad: After reboot, those hot links to Bing still operate.

Crap like that is just another thing that keeps me using Google.

I tend not to use sites that have inline ads. That's one advertisement that I find obnoxious and in my way. I return the notion by not visiting the site anymore.
