i remember doing this before it got to be an organized event.

I remember, back in '87 ( old guy speak ) i ran the "up hill mile" in San Francisco, from the bay up California Ave. All the talk, prior to the race, was that there was this dude from NY who had just won the Empire State Building stair climb event. He was the guy to beat, "they" said. I was running next to him and he stopped (DNF) at about 800 meters.
