I had to take one of these test for my current job. They seem to use them for sales jobs all of the time. I did some research on them and found a ton of companies out there who sell the test and the related services. It is a way for hiring managers who aren't good enough to tell a good candidate from a bad one to escape making a decision for themselves. All of the creators of these tests say they are "unbeatable" but I disagree. If you put a little thought into what is behind the questions, you can do pretty well on them. I guess maybe they weed out the people who can't figure that much out. My theory is, if you have to take them, then figure out how to beat them. Or you just might be the best candidate and get the job anyway.

What a total joke. I agree that you can typically see clear through the questions. In my previous under employed days, I took one. The results said I was a crook. (Funny, I am honest to a fault. Certainly more honest than the owner of the company and the top management.) They wanted to hire me so had me take it a second time. I passed. They hired me only to fire me a few months later when my boss had a wig out and made up a few stories about me. An excellent lesson of where not to work.

I tend to agree that it is completely acceptable to waste their time and money on this. It really is unethical BECAUSE they are so ineffective. You will be doing them a favor by pointing this out to them sooner by giving bogus answers and not accepting an interview. Psycho killer, pedophile, unabomber, jihadist. All good roles to play when you answer.

Have fun.

No no, go for the serial killer personality.

(I hate personality tests, I never seem to agree with myself which personality should answer the questions...)

I'm convinced that most of this kind of nonsense is just intended to legitimize the H.R. "process" rather than yielding any kind of substantial benefit.

+1 on that!

I'm not convinced these "tests" do anything. Hell, psychology is a pseudo-science anyway. Psychiatry is legit. Psychology is a lot of quackery wrapped up with just enough science to make it convincing to a dumb public. As an employer, I wouldn't waste my time (or anyone else's) on stuff like this.

I was with you until you went off on psychology. This kind of pop psychology, yeah, but psychology us a broad field and much of it is legitimate and useful.

Goal should be a visit from "Homeland Security" after taking the test.

With my employer from 2000 to 2005 he would give us a bonus every quarter. It ranged from $1000 to $5000 depending on how we had done. All of us in the flight department got one, and mine was usually a bit higher as I was running the department.

That said, we could save him $3-5000 in one flight by cutting corners on where we bought fuel (checking yesterday for a flight and found fuel over $1.00 a gallon cheaper. When you are buying 1200 gallons at a time that adds up) or getting a shortcut in flight that saves 10 minutes flight. Many flight crews do not care and just hand them the credit card and charge it. Sorry but I work deals for fuel and get the best price as the money I save is money that may keep our department alive later on this year.

The place I worked for in 2008/9 did not get a penny as a raise or bonus. Not a penny. That said was happy to have the job.

People are different and I would bend over backwards to make things happen for the first guy. Did the same for the second guy, just not as energetic.

Was having dinner with the owner from 2000-2005 last week in Vegas. I worked a deal on our hotel rooms for the crew so that we got in on a promo that gave us a fuel card worth $50 for each night we stayed. Told him about it and handed him the two $50 cards, after all he paid for them. When we headed out after dinner he gave me one of the cards. Thats gasoline that keeps me going for a week or two in the car and really helps. Thats why I bend over backwards for this gent. He is worth it!

I find these "head games" that they play with people just to show foot traffic coming in the door (that they have no intention of actually hiring) just to look busy to be really annoying. Toying with people and giving them false hopes when they're vulnerable like that is just plain wrong and unethical.

But how would most HR departments function if the secret got out that their existence is not really needed?
Most companies would function nicely without these pseudo-Nazis controlling every aspect of the business!

I sent an email declining and explaining I am seeking other opportunities.

I am filling out my application for my masters in energy systems with UW-Madison. I had a very, very favorable meeting with one of the heads of the engine research department.
