100x more confusing that modifying a 911 suspension..lifting/modding a truck!
damn. i thought i outgrew the urge to lift a truck. my last rig, was a Cj-7. easy.
i took my truck on an offroad camping trip. one section was a series of boulders, and baby heads. my truck did decent. but i almost smashed my door in. my tires also rubbed hard against fenders, and my rear suspension bottomed out with a moderately light load of camping gear. i need a itsy bitsy, teenytiny..2" of lift. 2 inches should be cake. SOB has the industry changed! i dont even know what i am shopping for anymore. maybe i will just play dumb and farm the entire job out. i want to keep my stock wheels and tires. no ring/pinion work. looking at a OME or toytec lift. anyone lift their toyota tacomas? |
Hey vash
I put a 3" RevTek suspension on my 01 Double Cab Tacoma, kept stock 16's and have on 265/75 BFG A/T When I shopped for mine I felt the same you do  I don't think there is a "2" suspension kit" for your truck only 2" body lift, if doing a suspension I think 3" is the minimum. You could do an add a leaf kit and some bilstein adjustables up front to level it out? That should give you the lift your looking for. |
Dumb question, is there still a TRD Off Road package for Tacomas? My Tacoma is a 98, but I believe it is a little higher with the TRD package than a standard 4X4 of that year.
I could be mistaken though. Tom |
I haven't lifted a Tacoma but I am no stranger to lifts. Ten years ago the options were body lifts, drop brackets, and how many shocks you want on each wheel if you wanted to get fancy:)
Now there are a lot of options that include control arms, coil overs, spindles, even bypasses! Are you looking just for a little more height or are you trying to make the suspension work better? What year is your yoda? Toyotech and Allpro make bolt in adjustable struts for Tacomas. Those struts plus some blocks in the back or an add a leaf... |
I stand corrected I just found this (uses spacers up front instead of adjustables)
Kit runs about $150 Quote:
They also make one that uses the blocks in back instead of the leafs. |
think this route?
Complete OME suspension Includes: $699.99 Front OME N140S shocks Front coils: 885 Add top plate spacers for a full 3" front lift with 884 and 885 coils ToyTec add-a-leafs Rear N182 shocks Front diff drop kit for 4x4 models OME trim spacer for a level front. but ditch the top plate spacer to keep it under 3". i may need to add upper control arms, and rear diff shims. right? argh! confusing. |
No experience with a tacoma, but I've got OME springs on my Rover and they are a great product. Gave about an inch of lift in front and 3 in back and a much nicer ride on or off road than OEM.

Cliff, Try here. They have lots of kits and if you scroll down to "tech specs" you can view a PDF of installation instructions so you know what you're getting into.
Toyota Tacoma Lift Kit 2005-2010 4x4 - 3" Kits (# 52907) Tuff Country Suspension |
I just did this to my DoubleCab. Sway-A-Way adjustable coilovers in front and add-a-leafs in the rear. About 1.5" - 2" of lift. I bought all of the stuff from Wheeler's Offroad. I went with 265/75-16 Yokohama all-terrains.
The ride is great and the installation was very easy. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1265314198.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1265314217.jpg |
Toyotas are harder to lift because they have ifs which is harder and more exspensive to lift the easiest way to get an inch or two is to do a t bar crank but you then have to have an alignment and you have a slightly harsher ride. With my old s10 i just did a t bar crank and spacers in the rear and that gave me 2-3 inches more clearance. ifs is NOT meant for rock crawling it's just not tough enough.

I've always wondered how lifting a truck affects the steering geometry.
I'd also think that if you lift a truck enough, you have to lengthen the driveshafts and the steering column. I also have no idea how you lift the front suspension. |
Quote:
Lifting the front now is extemely easy with adjustable coilovers. Four bolts on each side and they're on. It probably took me two hours start to finish. Changes in alignment, steering, etc. are a non-issue unless you're talking some serious lifts and then you're not worried about street driveability anyway - you've got a dedicated rockcrawler. |
i just got invited to a toyota "mod day". 3 trucks that are getting suspension jobs...free. i'll be there with my lucky wrench and camera. this can't be any harder than the rear of our 911's, right?
|
bottomline............make this simple. BUY TRD parts only. or go simpler route with sway away and add aleafs.
why because i know IVAN STEWART PERSONALLY AND HAVE DRANK MUCHO CERVEZAS with him! do you frigging know how much engineerring pesos get spent on suspension? the daze of straight axle spring/block lifts are over. on both of my IFS GM vehicles my front end guy (network alignment here phx.) told me how he gets rich off of dumbass POS lifts. simple suspension for IFS. sway away torsion bars HD pair of add a leafs in rear or go TRD route. simple werks and NO CLUSTER FEEK. take a look at TOYOTA SCORE CLASS 7 and 7S trucks. then you will be in the KNOW! |
I regularly lift trucks....from 3"-12"......and have a done quite a few tacomas.....I'll post some info when I get home from work
|
parts ordered. i plan for nose bleed elevation gains of two inches!!
gonna be easy, without all that reindexing BS. |
|
^ some aggressive folks on that site.
|
done!! had a buddy with a spring compressor help.
