And for some reason, the ones around here are all staffed with the nicest teenagers. As much as I hate everyone, I am usually in a good mood when at In N Out, because the staffers are so nice.

They have the nicest kids working the counter in L.A. as well. Every location I've ever been to, and that's a lot. It's an example of a brilliant corporate philosophy, (that I wish was copied more), where the hiring and training must be intense in the area of good customer service. These young people are without fail prompt, cheerful, polite and well-groomed. This does not happen by accident. It's a family-owned business and the founders were really smart to understand the importance of this. Those youngsters have an excellent bit of life training as they enter the work force after working there, IMO.

Their food and prices are great too.

In N Out is just your basic old school burger joint. It is a throw back to a time most in So Cal cannot remember. I like it alot. Portions are perfect.

The Hidden In-N-Out Burger (aka In and Out Burger) - The Most Accurate Secret Menu

In-N-Out Burger has a secret unpublished menu for insiders who are In-The-Know. Next time you're at In-N-Out (i.e. tomorrow . . . or maybe tonight), order a bag of these off-the-menu specials:
"3-by-3" = three meat patties and three slices of cheese.
"4-by-4" = four meat patties and four slices of cheese.
"2-by-4" = two meat patties and four slices of cheese.
*Note: You can get a burger with as many meat patties or cheese slices as you want. Just tell the In-N-Out Burger cashier how many meat patties and how much cheese you want and that is what you'll get! For instance, if you want 6 pieces of meat and 10 pieces of cheese tell them you want a "6-by-10."
"Double Meat" = like a Double Double without cheese.
"3 by Meat" = three meat patties and no cheese.
"Animal Style" = the meat is cooked and fried with mustard and then pickles are added, extra spread and grilled onions are added.
"Animal Style Fries" = fries with cheese, spread, grilled onions and pickles (if you ask for them).
"Protein Style" = for all you low-carbohydrate dieters, this is a burger with no bun (wrapped in lettuce).
"Flying Dutchman" = two meat patties, two slices of melted cheese and nothing else - not even a bun!
Fries "Well-Done" = extra crispy fries . . . even better than the regular!
Fries "Light" = opposite of fries well-done, more raw than most people like 'em
"Grilled Cheese" = no meat, just melted cheese, tomato, lettuce and spread on a bun.
"Veggie Burger" = burger without the patty or cheese. Sometimes we call this the "Wish Burger."

Top 6 aren't so secret, only been to I&O Burger once, but it was in Lost Wages. Meh, it's a Whataripoff in a different location.

Five Guys-if you like hockey puck patties, we've got em! And if the meat is never frozen and freshly ground why do you refuse to cook it rare? And you can eat a hot dog raw, it's already cooked-why do you insist to cut it in half and grill it to death? They have a corporate philosophy to overcook everything. Good fries though!

I had 5 Guys a few weeks ago. I would recommend this place no more then once a month for obvious health reasons. It was very good, an old fashion grill burger. Very greasy but good.

If you can get a burger that's still moo'ing and it's better than coming from the grill in the back yard, please advise. Just curious, who likes what blend best? I like 80/20, ground sirloin.

I buy Pat La Frieda burgers, cook them in a skillet. The problem I have with cooking burgers over charcoal is dripping fat causing flare ups. I like to taste the meat, not the char. Pat's cousin owns a burger joint called Boom about a half hour away, they do great burgers there, cooked perfectly medium rare.

Thanks for posting this menu. I'll be stopping at In-N-Out tonight to give the Animal burger a try.

About the only annoying thing about In-N-Out is that they are so popular that it's always crowded. Since the stores are not franchised (but all family owned), I guess there's a limit to how many they can open. I guess I'd prefer quality to quantity, and put up with the crowds. I have to say that they are FAST though. Especially the operation just south of Barstow off I15. That place is the biggest (and fastest) fast-food burger joint I've ever seen.

One final thought. In addition to the food, about my favorite thing about In-N-Out is that they seem to NEVER screw up your order... At least they never have with me. The people who work there are polite, helpful, and competent!

Another GOOD thing about In 'n Out is that they PAY their employees well! California's min wage is $8 and change.

I&O starts at $10.50 and if you stay with them you can afford to own your own home if you work your way up the chain of command.

Shake Shack NYC is way better than In-N-Out, but they are growing slowly -- sadly they will open in Dubai before they open a branch in California. Betty's Burgers and Jack's in Santa Cruz are great but not "chains." The branch of Kirk's on Homestead in Santa Clara turns out fabulous burgers as well. But if you're looking for a chain along the freeways of the West Coast, In-N-Out is hard to beat...

Fatburger was good, the last time I was in LA and tried it (2 years ago), though I remember it being greasy. Still prefer In-N-Out over it...cheap, great tasting, and you can expect it to taste the same no matter which one you go to. Plus they're open till 1am on the weekdays!

I enjoy In-N-Out - the only fast food I'll gladly eat. The BEST burger I've ever had is at "Crepeville" in Davis. And it's only 8 bucks...

I just don't get In-N-Out. The last time I was in San Fran I tried it. I thought it sucked, as did my wife and 18-year old son. Burgers sucked, fries were inedible... Maybe we're spoiled. Lot's of burger joints around here...

For a grown up burger try Father Office in LA. Not a chain but 2 locations. They also have 40 micro brews on tap.
They use the chain fat from dry aged steaks. Really good! Only problem is that it's small and there is always a line to get in.
