I use a Tivo HD box to do what you are discussing.

A PC will work fine. Get a video card with HDMI.

Most downloadable files on the internet are .avi's which are low quality for a HD screen.

You want the biggest files you can find. When I rip a movie, I rip at full strength. You can see every bit of compression on a nice TV.

Same here but have a S2 and S3 HD Tivo unit. The lot of them are connected to the server then network together. I can watch any movie on any of the boxes or from NetFlix over the internet.

Are we talking about legal downloads or bit torrent (not so legal)?
Either way, I think a windows box with a nice video card would be the best solution. It would do everything mentioned so far, and there is much more software available than there is for Mac OS.
Video quality is excellent on most pirated tv shows and movies. Certainly better than streaming netfliz or hulu.

Apple TV is perfect for me. Streams all of my content to the TV (Movies, Music and Pictures).

I use Handbrake to convert the DVD to MP4. I then use MetaX to acquire the chapters and box art and then drag and drop into iTunes and its available to stream. Of course these are the movies that I have had in my collection over the years.

I think we are discussing all kinds of downloads.

Small bluetooth keyboard allows you to download movies to the hard drive then play it on the big plasma. I'm sure there are cables available to convert PC video out to HDMI, etc... Good idea? Bad idea? I have a friend who copies movies to a 16 gig flash drive and plays them on his TV through a Sony Playstation. I'm looking to skip a step.

Can you download movies in 1080?

i've been doing this for ten years with my PC. i don't own a DVD player, except on the computer.

I bought a cheap Dell years ago, through Linux on their and then MythTV. Worked great... Until my TV died. Never replaced the TV, so the Dell was cannibalized.
