Was in the presence of some very dedicated scouters this weekend
Went to the yearly banquet that the Last frontier council of the BSA holds this weekend. Aside from all the Eagle scouts and Silver beaver recipients there were 3 men there that had been active in scouting for 60+ years. One of them made Eagle in 1937 and credits it with saving his life when he spent xmas '44 in a German POW camp. The other had Eagle'd in '40 and had received his Eagle badge from Dan Beard and Ernest Thompson Seton he was the one that handed me my council recognition for getting my Eagle. I can only hope to still be in that good of shape and still that active in scouting when I am their age.
Also at this banquet two men that were influential in my scouting career Received the Silver Beaver. One was in my troop when I joined and went on many of my early campout and who is who taught me to Canoe. The other had sons younger than me but helped with daycamp when my mom was camp director after I was already out of cubscouts. He ended up sitting on my final Eagle Board of Review. |

Never got my Eagle. Got to Star with enough to do Life, but never did the Scoutmaster's Conference/Board of Review. There were some internal troop politics that drove me away and I really wanted to get a job so that I could buy a car.
I do want to go back to Philmont some day. I think about it every summer...

Pretty much the same with me. I got to Star in a great troop. Then we moved. I then got Life, but ended up quitting. I've always sort of wished I'd stayed in, but I also wish I'd gotten to stay in the troop that I started in. Ah well, it was a fantastic life experience regardless. And moving to Japan was a life experience that I wouldn't change for the world.

got to life just short of my eagle. still hang out with (2) eagles from my troop that i grew up with. more fun and learning about backwoods camping that i still use to this day.
my kids made it thru cub scouts and then football/baseball took over. but with all the camping they have done along with fishing hunting they have learned from me how to survive in the dezert or the woods. my younger son is getting a crash course on winter survival in flagstaff working for snow bowl ski area. already an avalanche that took a guy back country snowboarding for a ride 1500yds down mtn and a couple of other backwoods rescues. hes hunted in the snow for 2 weeks, but now living/working in it daily has given him some better ideas on how to stay safe and warm by watching others mistakes. saw a lot of country with the BSA. |

My scoutmaster was a pedophile. He was as well our grade 6 teacher.
Get this - At lunchtime he used to hang 12 year old boys by the back of their belts, on the coat rack hooks in the back of the classroom. Then he would "massage" private parts. Mr. Pollack, that was his name. |
