Neat new gadget.
My daily driver is a 1986 El Camino. Automotive electronics have progressed a LOT in the 25 years since my car was made. I have always hated the bulky garage door openers that hang on the sun visor. I went looking for a solution. I found a rear view mirror with built in garage door openers, a compass and thermometer. The biggest thing I love about it is the automatic dimming of mirror. Now when the big pickup or SUV with the super bright headlights pulls up to my bumper the mirror just darkens automatically. It's wonderful.
It is pretty easy to hook up. One wire with constant 12V one with switched 12V the ground and the temp sensor mounted under the front bumper. I have no affiliation with the manufacturer or this supplier. This is where I ordered mine and it was shipped promptly. I just thought some of you might like a gadget like this. It is virtually identical to the mirror in my wife's Infinity. I don't think Pelican sells anything like this so I felt it would be OK to post this link. 50-GENK51AHomeLinkCompass/TemperatureAuto-DimmingGentex Harness -- MGT Motorsports Online Store |
Nice, kinda pricey but nice

An 86 Camino? How do you do it? I gave my 84 up years ago. Of course, with a 454, tunnel ram, and 4:11 gears it was too expensive to drive.

I saw a late model El Camino the other day with what looked like a teen or young adult driving it. I've always liked them, but I would imagine that having one these days might not be that popular.
The one that I saw was this body style. http://www.elcaminoclassifieds.com/j...4ElCamino4.jpg Oddly, I prefer that look to this one. http://www.carsearch.com/photos/740115.jpeg |
Yep, 4 headlights means 82 up in that body style. Never liked the SS. It looked too much like a Monte Carlo front end.
I wanted to take a 2 door 78 - 81 Malibu (same body style) and put the 82 up front clip on it. I've only seen one 2 door with the 82 up front clip. All the rest were 4 doors, or wagons. A wagon with the SS front clip looks better than you would think too. |
I had a 78 El Camino with a 1973 Corvette LT-1 motor, 4 speed manual and posi rear. What a rocket ship, but i blew up about 4 transmissions in it.

The same type of mirror came stock with my truck. It always amazes me how well it works at night.

I threw away the carburetor and put on a TBI fuel injection many years ago. I put in a 200R4 transmission with lockup and a limited slip 3:08 rear end. With a heavy foot it gets over 17 MPG in town and 21 on the highway at 75 MPH. The engine is original and has 281,000 miles and still runs strong. It is no tire burner but it is dependable. I bought lifetime guarantee parts from the beginning. Now my alternator, starter, brakes, water pump type of parts are free. I just replaced my alternator and it did not cost me a dime. Insurance is cheap and I have a stated value policy. |
