JET Drill Mill: tell me about it?

There's a used 12 speed drill mill locally available. It's got some collars and comes with a stand. What's a good price for such a thing?

It's a model 16. Whatcha know about it?

All I know is that you would be happier in the long run with a beefy old used Bridgeport if you actually plan to do much milling. The drill/mill units I have seen are not as solid as a real mill and will likely require very light machining passes to avoid having chatter. That said, a combo drill/mill unit would be better than not having any milling capability.

Bah! I haven't come across a Bridgeport in my area and you won't sell me one of yours

I'll pass on this. The guy is asking $650. I think a Bridgeport can be had for less than.

It would be tougher decision for me if it were in the $200-$300 range and I did not have a mill, but I agree 100% to holding out for a better deal.

Thanks gassy. I'm sending email.

Eta: doh! Just saw it's a 3 phase motor. I don't think I can do it.

You may also want to consider a variable frequency drive. They can adapt from 1 - 3 phase, provide overload protection, and give you speed control.

Drill mills are nothing more than glorified drill presses with an XY table. Like others have said, they are horrible with regards to rigidity. I'm assuming you meant that it at least comes with some collets, as you should never hold an endmill in a drill chuck if you are going to apply any sort of side loads (i.e: milling)

The initial cost of buying a real milling machine will be higher, but you will be much happier in the end. Bridgeports and their clones can be had for dirt cheap these days (sadly) due the number of machine shops closing their doors. Check craigslist, ebay, and visit local machine shops in your area for leads.

We have a nickname for a drill-mill around here: Chatty Cathy.

Unless you're planning on machining nothing but plastic, you'd be happier with a 1970's Bridgeport for a bit more money than a modern, junk drill press.

Currently bridgeports are very cheap so if you have the space, move up.

Souk, my Bridgeport is 3-phase. I simply bought this converter from an Ebay store for under $100. It works fine.
