Indy Car Delta wing concept

I've got opinions, () . . . what do all of you think?

I just saw the images, although I have been reading about the car for some time. It is far more radical than I imagined. In fact, I was pretty shocked by the appearance. It looks quite a bit longer than the current car, but that may not be true.

I also wonder about driver protection in side-impacts. The sides of the current car offer some driver protection.

I am anxious to read & learn more about this concept, & I hope they build one to get some real-world feedback on the viability of the design.

Not being an engineer, I can't answer that. It would seem to be an odd balance of torsional forces in that chassis between the narrow front and the wide rear. And a vertical stabilizer? I emailed Robin Miller to ask if they were serious. Don't expect an answer.

It's not an open wheel racecar.

Completely changes the dynamics of open wheel racing.

Hell yeah! Cmon, we need to stop rehashing the same stuff for 20-30-40 years. Time to move on. Its 2012. We should be having spaceship races by now! I applaud their brave, forward thinking.

Makes a lot of sense.
-When cornering, the weight distribution goes to the outside.
Instead of trying to keep a box-shape from twisting, this puts the torsional/etc load on the outer beam, which might allow for a lighter frame. The drawback is the tipping/rolling at lower speeds, but these are controlled by the wing, wheelbase, and height. Think fat tire 935.
-An open-wheel design naturally creates an air dam under the lower half of the wheel which creates lift under and drag behind. Channel that around and it would allow better grip(pehaps at the expense of some additional drag).
I'm suprised the golf-ball textures aren't used more.

Is it "cheating"? Hard to tell these days. If Indy was truely the "peak of technological application", they would have active surfaces, active Chaparral effects, leaning/flexing chassis etc... but the driver's brains would turn into meatpie by the 10th lap.

I know it's not a true three wheeler, but won't it wheel-barrel like one?

Mabye "active air surfaces" is banned. They never said 'nuthing 'bout active front wheelbase......until it happened.
So what is illegal: The extention A-arms? The more-adjustable shocks? The geometry angles? the booger-less(lightened) nose of the driver?

Racing seems all about politics in minutia these days, starting in the mid-70's Nascar when Richard Petty was banned for driving a more-efficient areodynamic vehicle(Road Runner Superbird).

I like it better than the hideous Dallara spec car they currently run. I give credit to Cheep for some far outside the box thinking.

Looks like a nightmare in a crosswind at Indy or Texas MS.

I think part of the problem with race series in the states is they are all becoming spec racing. Indy, CRASHCAR, Grand Am, (DP). Let that thing race!

But wouldn't it be a spec car, too?

No, what I mean is let it race with the Dalaras, Rileys, etc. Let the technology advance. Seems lately everything is piped down, dumbed down if you will.

Is that still "open wheel" racing? If it is faster, safer and allows for good racing it may spell the end of the pay driver - which could be a good thing. Hmmm
