input needed: findiing a good used go-kart?

What is the best way to find a good used racing go-kart?

My daughter (12) and son (8) want to go karting. They want to run paved kart tracks and eventually road courses. As a result I've been looking for a used karts and have no leads.
  • I've tried E-bay, and only a few dirt track karts show up within 200 miles.
  • Our home track, CMP, only has new karts for sale. (CMP HAS a rather new kart track).

So what's the best way to track down some good used karts?

I always see several with signs on them when actually at the races. Maybe just go to a local race or two prepared to haul one home and wander around and look?

A lot of times this way you may even have the opportunity to check them out as you'd be right next to the track.

Check the karting schools. Give them a call I bet they can help...

Find out where people are buying them new, probably could find this out at the races by asking around, or maybe doing some internet research. Then call them up and tell them your looking for a used kart and they will probably be able to either set you up with something or point you in the right direction. An alternative to this might be to go to a couple racing supply shop places, somewhere that sells helmets and racing suits and ask them what you would do.

Just buy an early 911...

This is a great idea.

I've been looking for an old 60's era cart to hang on my wall. One like I had when very young. One with a Mac 9, Clinton or other 2 stroke engine, with live axle, but have yet to find one. As of yet, hasn't happened. Can't imagine where they've all gone? You can find Whizzers, Cushmans, Doodle Bugs, Mustangs all over, but no old go carts.

There's a local geezer here that collects and restores them. He has one of the most complete supply of motors/exhausts/etc for old Mac's. Does beautiful work...want me to see what he has?

I think its hugely important to spend some time at the local kart track, and get an idea as to which classes have the big fields. You can get the best deal in town on a kart, but its gonna be very boring if you are racing against yourself!

The best place is where they're going to race. Otherwise you have a good chance of buying a kart that's been sitting for a couple years that will need more $$$ to prepare than you would spend on a new kart.
