Internet browsers

I'm currently running Internet Explorer 6.0 in my Windows XP desktop, but I have to upgrade to another browser because Youtube will soon be unaccessible with IE 6.0. I'm thinking of switching to Mozilla.

Is the browsing experience with Mozilla much different than IE?

Thanks in advance! ~ Rog

I like it better but that is just an opinion. Install it and see for yourself, if ya don't like it, delete it.

I like Firefox too but lately I've been using Google Chrome and I really like it a lot, very fast.

LakeCleElum 02-16-2010 06:10 AM

Been using it for years and love it. Very easy to learn and have not had one virus. Just added a new Netbook to the fleet yesterday......Only thing I used IE for was to download FireFox. Imported my bookmarks from the larger laptop and was running in under five minutes after the download.....You'll never look back....

I feel that firefox is light years ahead of IE. I think most would agree

genrex 02-16-2010 06:22 AM

Thanks for all the input! My mission is clear. Goodbye IE.. : )

How about in relationship to Safari on Mac? Any experience or thoughts?

Thanks

Tom

I have a Mac and I use FF before safari.

FF on OS X has become fat and bloated lately.

Used to be my default but have been using Camino last couple of years.

Safari and Chrome are the current next gen browsers. Both use Webkit which is also supposed to be implemented in the next major release of FF.

Been slowly migrating back to Safari.

Yes, but I still prefer it to Safari. Actually, I'm using the beta version of Chrome on my Mac and I like it best so far. Very simple and fast.

Stomachmonkey's judgment is likely better than mine as he actually owns a Mac and is more tech savy than I, but I do use Macs quite a bit when I am in labs at school. From my usage, firefox and safari seem to run about the same, but I prefer to use FF because of the slight differences in interface, tab openings, etc. But this is mostly because neither is customized to my settings on the school computers and the base setup of FF seems to suit me better than that of safari.

IE is garbage, and Firefox has become very bloated with recent releases. I'm using Chrome and am very happy with it, however some sites still require IE, so I have to keep it around for that. eg. live coverage of the olympics opening ceremonies ran like absolute crap on Chrome. They had a popup warning about it so I tried it in IE and it was perfectly smooth.

legion 02-16-2010 07:17 AM

IE has a bigger hard drive footprint but uses memory more efficienty.

FireFox is smaller but doesn't handle some active content (like Flash) very well.

After you download Firefox, add the extension AdBlock. It blocks the majority of the adds on web sites.

I use opera (called "the best browser no one has heard of") and firefox. Never use IE if you can help it.

Ever.

Opera is lightning fast. Much faster than Firefox (on my machine at least).

Adblock plus is what you want:

Chrome. I saw no advantage with FF but Chrome seems much faster than IE.

+1 for Opera. I like its e-mail feature, tabbed browsing, speed.

idontknow 02-16-2010 04:41 PM

Firefox here. The ease of use, easy customization, and quick speed keep me liking it.
IE ran slowly both in startup time and page loads.

I tried opera but it couldn't access my comcast email accounts and could only crawl through ebay.

Oracle 02-16-2010 08:33 PM

Firefox became too fat In my opinion. Chrome is perfect.

88-diamondblue 02-16-2010 09:21 PM

Opera is what I use on my main system (very fast) and Firefox on the old notebook. Speed dial n Opera is a great feature. Like them both and recommend FF to clients that are having trouble with IE. IE 8 for the most part sucks.

Another vote for Chrome, both Mac and PC. You could grow old waiting for Firefox to launch.

jbryant 02-17-2010 05:09 AM

I use Avant...very fast.

Is this an exaggeration? If not, then I think you have a problem with my computer. I use FF and it opens within a few seconds of clicking on it. Not saying use FF, use whatever you want, but I have never had a problem with it opening. Same with every other browser.

The latest FF for OS X opens very slowly. Not "get old" slow but noticeably slower than before. I have become a Chrome fan even though the OS X version is still in beta.

gr8fl4porsche 02-17-2010 07:28 AM

I use the Firefox Preloader Add-on. FF opens instantly.

I use FF because of all the add-ons. There is a free app for most special features you can dream up. For example, if you like to capture streaming video, there is an app for that. If you want to monitor multiple gmail accounts with pop-up notification, there is an app for that.

I am starting to sound like a cell phone commercial.

stomachmonkey 02-17-2010 08:13 AM

Don't focus so much on app loading time. It's more about page load, general responsiveness, features, compatibility.

An app can be made appear to load quickly but may not be immediately available to the user because it needs to finish loading resources in the background.

Or it can load everything it needs before allowing the user to interact with it making it appear to be slower.

OS's have done stuff like this over the years. Easiest way to make a snappy feeling OS is to assign mouse/keyboard functions as higher priority processes.

campbellcj 02-18-2010 06:36 AM

I've been using Chrome at work and Firefox at home (Windows 7 & Mac)

Why would I try a replacement of IE with something that has IE at it's core.?? Probably the security issues are at its core so maybe you're as exposed as IE...

sammyg2 02-18-2010 05:58 PM

firefox for me too.

I'm not suggesting that you try it, I was responding to the guy who did.
