the best drummer you probably never heard

This is a drum solo that actually is musical. Not just "see how fast I can play" or "see how loud I can play." Sick.

My favorite drummers have always played on relativley simple kits and just seemed to make the most of what they had. Were/are they the best? No. But they made magic to my ears and eyes (I always watch the drummer at the shows I see):

Patrick Carney: The Black Keys
Billy Conway: Morphine
Patrick Halahan: My Morning Jacket

Favorite "big name" drummers would be:
Keith Moon: The Who
John Bonham: Led Zep
and do I even need to mention that other guy from a Canadian band?

And FWIW, I love the style you posted in the video! AWESOME!

Hmmm, I wonder who that could be. Sounds like you're talking about my favorite Canadian drummer.

You've probably never heard of them (or care) but Godsmack's drummer and singer (Justin and Jiash) team up for a musical percussive solo:

A few of my favorites:

David Garibaldi
Chad Wackerman
Steve Gadd
Zorro
Terry Bozzio
Buddy Miles
Billy Cobham
Butch Trucks / Jaimoe (joined at the hip)
Gray Barrier (also awesome melodic player)
and any of the New Orleans cats (seem to have a good handle on pocket & rim).

The thing that was amazing about Carlock was the energy he brought to the songs...never overpowered them, but played within and around them. I saw Steely Dan with Peter Erskine in '93, Dennis Chambers in '94, Ricky Lawson in '00, and Carlock in '03. Got to see/hear all 4 drummers playing some of the same tunes. Carlock transformed every last one of the songs. I've never seen/heard anything quite like it.

That was one of the best drum solos I've ever heard and I've heard alot! Reminds me of Steve Gadd...very tasteful!

Joey Jordison. You've probably never heard of him. Yes, he is only loud and fast. But OMG fast at 250+ bpm double bass drum kicks. This solo clip is from 45 minutes into a hard set and is rotating through all axis. The drugs this kid must take to make it through a full set.

nostatic, besides Zigaboo being an obvious choice in the New Orleans realm, you might want to check out some of the newer cats as well:

Stanton Moore -Galactic (prophylactic)

David Batiste, Jr. - Papa Grows Funk

"Jellybean" Alexander - John Cleary & the absolute monster gentlemen

Guys like this are growing on trees down here, and it makes it so much fun to play with guys who dont force the pocket.

Don't make me repost a youtube link

Stevie Wonder could take 'em all on drums, IMO.

Okay, fine. But did you really know that he played the drums, tho? I mean, before you hung out with him and had lunch at his house three times? I hate you, BTW

Townsley is *very* good. Here's another one, Billy Kilson

Playing with Chris Botti. Saw him open for EW&F the night of my motorcycle crash. Was a great night up until the coyote
