Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse, and Custer;

Anyone know if one can do a quickie tour of all 3 while eastbound on 90. We will be driving that way this weekend and my wife has never seen Rushmore. So I thought we might see all 3 without making a day of it and still making good time eastward? Is there a route that will cover all 3 and get us back to I-90?

It is 1/2 hour to get to Rushmore from Rapid City and about 40 min to get to custer from there and you go right by Crazy Horse on the way. Around 2.5 hours to do the loop with no stops but is fun and you can see everything from the road if you don't want to stop. Worth the trip and some of the roads are a lot of fun. I have done it in a lot less time but was not site seeing at the time:D

Here is a post about the first trip out there after I got the car. And what the roads look like. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/180184-black-hills-twistys.html

One way to go is take highway 85 from Spearfish to Deadwood (HBO series is about)which is worth seeing, you have to drive through it to keep going south, 85 turns into 385 from Deadwood. Great drive through the Hills. You will get to Hill City and need to keep going south 7 miles to Crazy Horse and Custer is 25 minutes south of Hill City. You would back track up 385 to the south side of Hill City and turn at the Mt Rushmore 244 and come up the back side of the heads. From there you would take 16 to Rapid City and back on to I-90. Look it up on Google maps and you will see about what driving time is and you save and hour by not driving to Rapid City first.

Badlands National Park is amazing. It's east of Rapid City.

Badlands from our 2007 road trip in the 73E:

My wife thought is just a tad windy there:

Jim, you drove the 73 from DC on your trip? Now that's a ride. I was born in DC and grew up in Rockville, MD.

We'll see Badlands all white this weekend, and cold.

I think the first picture is great! Thanks. A trip I will be making

Yes, Dan, we drove as far west a Wyoming, and then south though CO and NW, and then back to DC. It was a great trip. Porsches are fun to drive everywhere. :)

We got to the Rapid City area this evening but got here too late to make a go at it. Stayed in Butte last night and damn was it cold at 2 F this morning. Staying at the AF base here for the night and will backtrack tomorrow morning to see the sights. Weather should be Ok, cold of course with a bit of snow they say. Then off to maybe Omaha or KC on our way to St Louis.

Let us know how it is.

Guys,

This REALLY is not the time of year to be driving anything in this part of the country! Aside from cold and windy, the weather is just plain unfriendly this time of year. If you have even the smallest bit of trouble (flat tire) life will not be fun and you will be asking yourself why not try this in July next time!

Hope all goes well on the journey! Have made it several times but always take the Southern route this time of year.

Please take pictures and post them, I'd love to see the Badlands covered in snow. I was there last July, awesome trip.

We got to the monument this morning and damn was it cold w/clear skies. It was gorgeous. The roads were a little dicey on the way out there but they salted them by the time we headed back. What a nice display and museum. I hadn't been there since the 80's and man what a difference. Tried to get pics of all the welcome signs, some we got and then just spaced out on others. Havin a great trip though I am well aware this is not the best time to be cruisin thru the northern tier. Got my baby with me, the cell phone, AAA card, warm clothes, packin some heat and some Baileys in the trunk. Got all the angles covered.

Finally out of the snow and freezing cold. Apparently the ice storm in KC was worse in St Joe. Never saw so many cars off the freeway and in ditches north and east of KC. Unbelievable. Some with lots of damage and some just buried up to their axles.

Stopped in St Louis for an Arch visit and then on to Padukah KY. Should do an early lunch in Nashville today and maybe make home if we press on.
