Diesel Truck Questions for PPOT

Our International is starting to show its age. We have several in this category, but this particular juan is a 97 with the inline turbo 6 (DT466) w/ 33KGVWR. We use it to transport skiploaders.

I have been looking at new and used. Surprisingly there are few used units that fit our requirements. Internationals is now pushing a new engine, the 2010 compliant, called the Maxforce7, common rail direct injection turbo V8. The old DT466 is still available, is a tried and true powerplant, and we know how to maintain it, but is only available for a $4K add on. Anyone know anything about this new engine?

I'd buy one lightly used and get the DT... You really can't beat that motor... We have 3 trucks with them and they are great.....

I'd wait a few years to let them get the bugs out of that new motor....

And a '97 showing its age? How many miles? Not cheaper to fix the truck?

the 97 is great. it has 200K+ but will start needing a bit more down time, and as biz picks up we find ourselves short one tractor hauler. We have two we have taken off registration as they are 1984's and they will cost an arm and a leg to bring into CA emissions compliance.

We historically used 3 tractor haulers but have been getting by with just the one for the last 2 years.

That truck ought to be good for at least another 200k pretty trouble free....

I agree - but we need an additional truck due to increased volume.

What are 2-5yr old trucks going for? I'd think that would be your best bet...

In a past life, I used to supply a significant amount of product to Freightliner. There was talk of putting exhaust gas back into the intake to bump up the combustion temperature to meet emissions. If this is what you are mentioning, the engineers at FL were pretty convinced that it would drop mileage and reliability in the first few years. My info is circa 2000 but I know that the emission deadline for diesels was pushed out a number of times so I think this is correct. Don't know how 10 years of development helped this. Just a thought.
