Getting a doctor for a second opinion (complicated)
My business partner's son is in the hospital. He's been in for over a week with a case of RSV. They have had him on a ventilator (i think that's the correct term). He has no fever left and seems to be recovering. They keep pushing out his release date from the hospital. Obviously, my friend and his wife are frazzled. They keep thinking they're going home and they keep having the rug pulled out from under them.
Since the boy is in the hospital, how does one go about getting a second opinion on his care at this point? Does the doctor need to have privileges at the hospital? Is it possible to even do this? Any help is appreciated.

RSV is a BFD. The last thing you want is an early discharge after a ventilator dependent hospital admission.

My son had it pretty bad. RSV is very common - almost all adults have had it. IT is just hard on little ones. Our son was on Virasol (sp.) and in oxygen tents for 13 days. At one point he had to be intibated(sp?) for a collapsed lung etc. He recovered fully but it was dicey for a bit.
While it was 14 years ago I do not remember him having a fever after a few days. I would definitely be the squeaky wheel.

I can't help with advice but my son had RSV when he was about 2. He was in IC for only 2 days. Freaked us out but he had no complications.
Listen to Moses. He would know about these things. Best wishes to your friend's little one.

Anybody consulting would have to have privileges at that facility. You probably already have the stud pulmonology guys at that facility on the case.
RSV is no joke with a little gaffer like that, D/C home too early is not what you are after. Tell your partner to hang in there, make sure he and the wife are eating, sleeping, that sort of thing.

I don't think they're after an early discharge. I think they just want to make sure they're doing the right thing.
