North American Hand Made Bicycle Show

I didn't go as this was in Richmond, VA. But nonetheless, for those interested, here are some photos from the show. Gorgeous stuff. If you look hard enough, Pelican's own jtkkz and his Sycip brand of hand-built frames can be seen in a few of the shots.

I'm running the table with frames these days. Trying out Steel, Titanium and (of late) Carbon Fiber.

Ti and C/F are nice, but so far they really can't compare to steel.

Great shots, thanks for posting.

I'd love to have something like a Sycip someday, things of beauty.

I was given a Merlin for a year to race on it was the best frame I ever used, apart from the ones I built of course .Europe has been blitzed with cheap chinese ally frames for the last 10 years and really ruined the bespoke builders businesses

I love steel, but would take my Moots over anything else.

Good equipment is good equipment, whether it is a bicycle or a fine german car. Sports cars and road bikes seem to draw the same pool of people.

Why do you think that? Why do you think they (many, many) fit carbon forks on their steel frames?

thanks for the tip on Bicycle John's. the Look frame is too big for me also. As it turned out, I know who the owner is from the old days. We both know some of the riders from way back. He's got a lot of nice stuff and not a lot of crappy mass produced junk like other shops. Look like a Ridley or BMC for me. Can't decide.

Wow I had no idea Paul Wyganowski was still doing frames...

brooks saddles and ta cranks havent seen those for a while.
Many fit carbon forks because they are cheap to buy, steel forks when building a frame set are arguably the hardest part to get right

You are correct. Best setup I ever rode was 6/4 Ti with a carbon fork; beat steel in every way.

More comfortable in the seat stays, stiffer fork when you got on it- yet compliant over the road vibrations. Stiff bottom end of the frame and rigid in the main triangle.

I think many fit carbon forks on their steel frames because they are 1) weight conscious, when in all actuality, the main weight savings is almost always in the wheels - carbon forks = maybe .25 lb and are expensive; and 2) if concerned with flex, don't know that they can have steel forks built that can be as rigid as c/f. I have a Curt Goodrich custom-built steel fork on one of my frames that substituted a Time fork. The Goodrich is extremely stiff on sprints, but when you back off, like butter. As to the bike -- an '87 SL Columbus 53cm with DT shifting -- it weighs 19lbs and loves the Rose Bowl.

I just bought a Ridley. It's in the shop now -- you might have seen it. We did the fitting Saturday; needs more compact bars. I've put about 30 mi. on it; very fast, very comfortable -- destroys all carbon myths about harshness.

Quiring makes awesome frames. They're on my short list if I ever want Ti again.

But the best part, IMO. Brooks saddles are the second best.

Sometimes -- no, often times, it's too close for me to call. Like I said, each material feels good. Each serve their purpose very well.

Naked Ti has a great industrial look to it...

No way - Brooks saddles are designed by the Marquis de Sade... I can put any specialized body geometry or terry fly on a bike and do a 24 hour race. Wouldn't ride across a parking lot on a brooks. The only worse saddle I've ever ridden was a carbon saddle. No cover, no pad, just carbon. That was actually worse but only a little.

We were there , too! I couldn't figure out how to save the picture of our booth from the Flicker photostream, but I do the manufacturing engineering for the parts like above.

Nice. If that's stiffer than Dura Ace, I'd like to check it out. Do you have a website?
