Got offered a job today
 

I got a call today offering me a job that would last a month or two. I retired at 50 a couple of years ago, and except for working a week to fill in for the guy that took my place, I havn't had a paid job since.

I told him that I wasn't interested, and he surly could find someone less expensive than I would work for. The job was an easy one, probably be busy for a couple of hours a day, and just killing time the rest of the day.

It would have been an easy $100 buck an hour, but after taxes, travel time, ect I told him that I would rather go golfing.

But it is nice to be asked. But I probably won't be asked again.

I once wondered how in the world a consultant could be worth $200 per hour. As it turns out, if the consultant is the only person in the meeting with common sense, then he's worth the money. Old guys rock.

But sometimes you really need a young guy or girl right out of college to give a fresh perspective on things.

I agree, a combination of youth and experience makes for a great team.

No truer words exist in this job market.

Too true - unfortunately I know of too many companies who chopped their most experienced people when they started to freak over declining revenues last year. It didn't matter who was the most productive, most valuable or most experienced or gave them the most flexibility in showing breadth of experience to go after new work in non-core areas, if you were one of the highest-paid (which meant most experienced in most cases) you were the one that got the axe.

Far, far too common of a story. And VERY short-sighted thinking.

It underscores the difference between smart companies run by business people and stupid companies run by bean counters.

When I was doing overseas contract work was paid $1500 a day on a certain new airplane. Would not go out the door for less. Then there was the $150 a day per diem and all hotel expenses covered on top of that.

Work, no work, sit in the hotel or fly our rears off, thats what it cost to get my services in the left seat of the jet. When you look at the cost per hour considering the days we ended up sitting somewhere when the boss took a few days (or weeks) off, it was not cheap.

Experience is not cheap and it takes years to get...

Pay me now or pay someone else to do it cheaper. Then pay me later too.

I can't wait to retire and make 3x more for what I do :)

When your truly retired you can tell them no thanks, at 3x the money. That is what feels good.

I'm currently working on a 1964 model travel trailer because I want to. This time next year I'll go on a trip with it someplace warm. Next I may do something with my 71 coupe, or I'll find another project because its what I like doing. My time is my own.

I understand about "your time to do as you please." I figure when I'm retired I can pick and choose the jobs I want, and the rest of the time do whatever I please :)

My wife keeps telling me I'd be bore if I wasn't working and she's probably right. Even with plenty of projects around the house I find I need some intelletual challenges to keep my wheels turning. Might as well get paid for it :)

Have fun with the trailer. I'd like to do that one day too. The wife and I were jus talking the other day that when I retire we'll just build a very large building and live in a trailer or coach inside it. Plenty of room for all my toys and outside the "house" will be climate controlled. The grand kids can have an indoor playground and kart track. We chuckle.

Souk, I can't imagine you'll ever be bored. How many projects do you have going on at this moment in time? :)

Just a suggestion, but if Seaworld calls, looking for an Orca trainer, you might want to turn that one down too.
