Questions for Hagerty Insurance people
Just putting the 911 on Hagerty insurance. Was easy, painless and price was right.
Now that they have asked me loads of questions and wanted pictures of the car and so on... What can I do and stay within their guidelines. They were really concerned about its being in a garage, then my not driving it every day to work and so on. Can you hop in it and just go driving or stop at the store on the way home or ???? Do not want to get into trouble but did not want to push my limits with the ladies on the phone. OddJob Uno is stopping by in 15 minutes and we head South to pick it up. Am jazzed to drive it after almost 5 years of it being mothballed! Thx, Joe A

I don't really think they are too worried about it, but if you go to the supermarket and your car gets blasted by a shopping cart, you need to know that they probably won't cover you.
I think if you were out cruising around and just happened by the airport, they won't say much. In my experience the toughest thing to comply with is the mileage restriction, but if you ever go on a long trip you can call them and talk to them about it and as long as they knew ahead of time, you're fine. With that said, I've never filed a claim, so I don't REALLY know.

What Hagerty tells you on the phone may not be the same or backed up by the company who actually Underwrites the policy.

I've been looking into the same issues, although I've only driven 10k in 10 years. Most of that was track miles, but I'm looking at street miles now. It's in the garage at home full time.
I have a DD, but would like to just take it to the store or drive it some days. Last edited by A930Rocket; 04-07-2010 at 01:11 PM.. |

I have my 38 Buick registered as an antique vehicle here in MA, and there are basically the same restrictions for use... no problem taking it for a pleasure ride, going to a car show, taking it somewhere for maintenance etc. but they will not cover you (and you will get harassed by the staties) if you are using it to commute or run errands. The plus side is that my Porsche (which is appraised for insurance at close to the value of the '38) costs be about $200/month in insurance whereas the Buick costs about $7/month.

The fact that I might swing by my office first to drop something off or check my e-mail should not void my policy in my opinion. At least that's the way I've always looked at it.

I emailed them and have it saved...just in case, I have to "excuse me while I whip this out" for them.
From me... Subject: Policy coverage questions Where the coverage says "Is used only infrequently for other purposes" can that mean infrequently as a "Regular use vehicle"? I have picked my kids up from school a couple of times, stopped at the store and have driven my Hagerty insured car to work to attend the car club meetings after work to save on the 50 mile round trip to return home to get the vehicle to drive back to the meeting/activity. Under these conditions, would my insurance through Hagerty not be covered? Thanks From Hagerty: Thank you for your recent email! Our policy is a flexible but limited use policy. We do not limit you to just show and club use. Occasional pleasure driving fits our underwriting guidelines, but our policy is not intended for vehicles regularly driven to work or school or for running errands. We look for usage that is consistent with owning a valuable automobile and the availability of insured regular use vehicles for daily transportation. Your insurance would cover you during the activities you describe in your email. If you have additional questions, please feel free to call our office at (800)922-4050 and any one of our friendly agents will be happy to assist you. We are open Monday - Friday 8:30am - 8pm, Saturday 8:30am - 4pm and Sunday 12pm - 4pm (Eastern). Regards, Christy Anderson Licensed Agent Hagerty Collector Network Tel: 800.922.4050 Hagerty - Collector Car and Boat Insurance I can forward you the actual email if you would like.

Mitch,
Would love to have a copy of that! joeaksa AT attglobal.net That would CYA just in case. The 911 will never be my "daily driver" but dammit, its fun to drive and need to keep it "limbered up" from time to time. Thx, Joe A

I think if you were out in the car an involved in an incident while DD the car you would most likely respond that you were taking the car to the shop.
How are they to prove otherwise?

i have hagerty and never worry about it being covered except at the track. you need specific track use coverage for that and i dont think hagerty does that.
how would they know if you are using it for a DD or just for what the policy covers, unless you tell them? so i wouldnt worry about it. our states colector plate rules are about the same for when it is on the road but how will LEO know why you are driving either? one thing the state allows is "for the enjoyment of others".... any time my 40yr old car is on the road is bound to make someone happy ![]() the main restrictions i see is them wanting you to have an insured modern daily driver and to have the colector car garaged. there is someone on this board that has colector insurance on five cars for 3 drivers three of them are their daily drivers...but the wife drives a modern car so they all use her car as the modern dd requirement. i love the spare parts part of my policy...it covered a complete windsheild replacement no problem.

Hagerty insures both my cars. I can't complain because I've never made a claim. They limit me to 5,000 miles a year, and not to use the car as a commuter. But I don't drive either car enuff to come anywhere near that. It's 400 bucks for both cars, and the minimum policy is/was 300 bucks.

I felt bad, first week of my Hagerty policy and I used the towing policy. Had one last teething episode in the '72. They were really cool about it.

I would strongly suggest reading the fine print of the underwriter's policy before you make assumptions about an insurer. We all know whose side they're on.
Our Haggerty equivalent - Silver Wheels - was adamant about no work & no errands & every driver in the house had to have there own vehicle. When I sold the BMW, I had to switch insurers for broader coverage at double the rate. Just sayin' . . . check the fine print. And an email is only proof of what that employee said on that day. A day later, they can deny coverage. Ian

I had my first 944 insured through Silver Wheels when it was rear ended on the 401. The accident happened on a Tuesday mid day. No one ever asked me what I was doing, where I was going or anything else. I was on my way for an oil change.

They don't have to prove it you have to when they deny the claim and it cost me over 8k to do so, just say-in!

Joe, I tried Haggerty. They had a milage policy, basically let me go back and forth to car shows. I went with Grundy. No milage issues. I had Allstate but with all I did to the car the insurance was way to low in case of a total. Allstate wanted an appraisal from a Porsche dealer to give me coverage on what the car is now worth. I couldn't get a dealer to give me an appraisal on 'such an old car'. Grundy agreed to a $32,000 agreed upon value. And I can drive the thing! Had to show pics, proof of another car, garage, and driving record but I'm good to go now.

ive been with them for 4 years. i recall vaguely them sending me a questionnaire regarding where i stored car and how much i used it and for what purpose. best i can recall, i have agreed value for the purchase price of car, i cant use it to drive to work, no parades, and there is a mileage limit of a few thousand miles per year...cant remember exactly how much...basically the understanding is that they have insured a garage-kept hobby car that gets used on sunny days in the summer
they never asked for photos or an appraisal or any mileage documentation other than the odometer reading at the time the policy was made

if i was ever in an accident...i suspect, regarding the miles limit, that they would look at the odometer reading at time of policy and then look at odometer at time of crash and calculate the average yearly miles
for some reason, Haggerty strikes me as the type of company to overlook a few extra miles. if however, the limit is 1,000 a year and your driving 8,000 a year..i would expect a denial of coverage
