Remember Aron Ralston...the climber who amputated his own arm to survive?
The Darwin thread reminded me of this guy. That was a will to survivve. Interesting update on where he is today...

Here's another guy who won't back down:
Running Strong - The Boston Globe "Hugh Herr walks around his MIT laboratory with a swagger, a smooth, hip-driven motion that draws comparison with the way John Wayne would mosey through a dusty Western town." "Twenty years ago, he was accused of cheating in competitive rock climbing; he had competed wearing prosthetic legs he had designed for the sport." |

40 years ago my uncle went combining one morning. He decided the chain drive needed to be adjusted. His left arm was dragged into the sprocket up past his elbow. His options were sit there till after dark in hopes someone would notice he was missing (single guy) and possibly bleed to death or get out his pocket knife.
I keep a folding knife with me at all times because of him.

I bumped into Hugh Herr while rock climbing in upstate NY years ago. He was free soloing (no rope, no falling allowed) a climb next to me that was about 5 times harder than the one I was struggling on. The man is simply amazing.
