Anyone Delt with Costochondritis??

Well, I woke up yesterday, and the right side of my chest was sore, didn't think much of it, figured I slept wrong. Well, today it hurt worse, hurt to breath, and when out to get my tux for a wedding I'm in this weeked. While going down the road, it was getting harder for me to breath, so since my Doc's office was right there, I figured it would be a good idea to stop & find out what was up.
Turned out to be Costochondritis.

Costochondritis is a condition that causes chest pain due to inflammation of the cartilage and bones in the chest wall. Also called Tietze's Syndrome, costochondritis occurs when there is inflammation at the junction of the rib bone and breastbone (sternum). At this junction, there is cartilage joining these bones. This cartilage can become irritated and inflamed. Depending on the extent of the inflammation, costochondritis can be quite painful.

Anyone else have this??

Is this something you got at Costco?

Joke aside, maybe taking some joint supplements such as MSM+chondroitin would help your condition. They do wonders on all joints.

He used to run a dry cleaners down the street. I quit dealing with him when he lost my $800 leather jacket and head butted me in the staircase.

He put me on some anti-inflammatory drugs, said to try & take it easy for a bit:rolleyes:

I still haven't gotten the rest of my stuff out of the broken barn yet either:(

There are pieces of cartilage between the ribs and sternum, about 1" long each, with joints at both ends. These joints can become arthritic/inflammed and hurt like hell, sometimes mimicking a heart attack.

The pain can be reproduced by direct pressure over the joint, right next to the breastbone and about an inch lateral, on either side.

Take your anti-inflammatories as prescribed, and well past the point where the pain is gone. You are looking for not only pain killing but resolution of the inflammation.

PS: I have the damn thing too..

Thanks Jeff :)

And glad I could help Lisa :)

Racer...I had the same sort of thing about 10 years ago. Felt like some was stabbing me front to back with a knife.

Oh Haha 03-06-2010 05:00 AM

Wow Byron, do you ever have a day when you AREN'T in some sort of pain/malady?

Kidding aside, I think I had this about 15 years ago. The doc concluded that mine was stress related so no treatment was needed.

My father has Poly-chondritis. Very rare disease that also deals with cartilage.
Basically, his immune system thinks that cartilage in his body is a foreign substance and tries to remove it. This results in knee pain and swelling, ear pain and swelling and a whole slew of other things. Not fun. Basically there's no cure and he's on a concoction of steroids to help alleviate the flare-ups. Not fun.
Best of luck with your condition.

I was having pain directly over my heart in a small area and my doctor diagnoses was the same as yours. I took one Mobic a day for three or four days, then switched over to every other day......So far, so good!

Byron
I was driving to the airport to catch a flight about two years ago and had severe chest pains - thought I was having a heart attack. I pulled off highway and made it to hospital. Spend a night with stress test etc. Heart was fine. This is what I was diagnosed with, it flares up about once a month and I can setting it down with Motrin. Very unnerving for sure. I had a severe motorcycle accident in my twenties and tore the cartilege in my chest plate, this is where the arthritis is attacking - Sucks getting Old!

nynor 03-06-2010 05:36 PM

yeah. i thought i was dying. it was seriously painful, had me doubled over on the couch. i had been in a serious motorcycle accident a couple of months prior (brain contusion, avulsed flesh/muscle on forearm, laceration of the quadriceps to the femur, 400+ stitches to close it all up). i still get minor flare-ups, but the first couple were extremely intense.

BlueSkyJaunte 03-06-2010 11:47 PM

I get it all the time. Sucks because it feels like the time I had a spontaneous pneumothorax. :(
