Travel

Last year, I went to Florida 4 times, the UP of MI, and DC. (I don't really consider trips to Chicago or Indiana to be "travel".) All travel last year was personal.

I've already been to Arkansas this year, and will be travelling to Las Vegas for work, New Orleans and the Bahamas for pleasure. I'll probably be down in Georgia for one of the holidays.

Do you have a point other than curiosity?

But for fun, I’ll play along anyway . . .

Done this year:

Vegas (trip #2 in April)
Tampa/St Pete’s/Sarasota/Ocala
Montreal (trip #2 in March)
New York/Lower Brooklyn
Miami/Ft Lauderdale/Pompano/Deerfield/Boca Raton/West Palm with Coconut Grove, Palm Beach, Marco Island & Naples thrown in for pleasure
Jacksonville

And before the end of the year, I will have to revisit much of the above & various points in Oklahoma, Louisiana, Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia, both Carolinas and Virginia & I should visit Arkansas & Mississippi as well. There is always the possibility of a quick hop to France.

No pleasure travel is planned as we prepare for Turkey (probably) in 2011.

I am sure some of the pilots here have very long lists.

Ian

Ian, I am going to Montreal for the GP in June and I know that you are one of the travel kings on the BBS. Any suggestions? You can send me a PM so we don't get this TOTALLY off.

I have found that traveling outside of one's own country pays the greatest dividends.
Start while you are young, do it often.

I travel a lot for work. So far this year I have over 20,000 actual miles flown all within the continental US. I won't bore you with the details of where I have been, but as an example, last week I started off flying to San Antonio, then Minneapolis and finished the week up in Northwest Arkansas, then back to Denver.

I travel to Puerto Rico a couple of times a year, and this year I will be going to China, India and a number of Cities / Countries in Europe. I spent over a week in Sweden a few years ago.

I consider the travel to be part of my job, as I prefer face to face meeting with clients, and my employees. Some of my trips are strictly business, but on others I try to get out and see the sites, learn about the city or area I am in. Alot of the times I have local folks take me around, so I avoid the touristy places, and see more authentic areas.

Yes, I am away from family, but I try to only travel during the week (obviously that won't be practical for some of my overseas trips this year). It can be tough on both my wife and I, but my father was active duty Navy for 24 years, and he used to be gone 6-8 month stretches at a time.

As a family we spend a lot of time away camping, spend over a week at the beach, and I go to Vegas for a hockey tourny I play in every year.

Last year went to Germany, Australia, New York, Oregon, Denver, all on business. Oh, and a lame Mexican cruise over spring break.

For some, "pleasure travel" is finding broadband in your hotel room that you don't have to sign in by name or room number...

Everything else is just work.

I'm putting together my agenda for the Vegas conference in May right now.

A week ago, my boss was pretty-well decided that I wouldn't be going. On Monday she gave me the green light after talking to her boss. I'm not entirely sure what happened, but I'd like to think that my follow-up e-mail to her questioning the need to go was persuasive.

And don't read anything bad into this, my boss is extremely even-handed. Budgets are tight right now, so a real business need needs to be presented to her management for approval, and asking for ridiculous with poor reasoning things makes her look bad.

I go nowhere that involves flying...not scared to fly, just avoiding the PITA experience.

I feel the same way even though I do fly when necessary. In fact, I'm sitting right now in Atlanta after missing a connection due to weather. We were supposed to connect on the 5:35 flight but it looks like we'll be flying out at 10:50. I've been thinking about flying while sitting here and I can't think of a single flight I've ever taken where I said to myself... I really enjoyed that experience.

The 70s & early 80s weren't bad. A hot meal - often steak. Free wine. Free drinks. I often arrived feeling quite good actually. Now I am very happy just to arrive on time.

I can't comment on that. I wasn't flying back then. Even when I arrive on time I find that it was a miserable experience. Still, it's faster than driving unless you get delayed like we are.

You just have to go into zone mode. Like a lizard. Numb yourself to all of the annoyance around you. I am getting much better at it. And always have a good book to read.

And drink heavily when you finally arrive.

Yes. I know how to do a long flight.
