Lots of modern players could sure take a life lesson from this guy.
RIP

Very sad. I grew up watching him play with the Rams. Very few in the NFL have the class MO had.

I grew up watching him too. Then, he became a spokesman for FTD Florists. I always found that amusing. Merlin Olsen, the sweet flower sales guy. Yeah, right! He was the master of the now-outlawed helmet slap. At the end of the game, his assignment on the other team couldn't hear. He was as gentle as Kick Butkis. RIP, Merlin.

Wasn't he one of the 'fearsome foursome' of the Rams?

Maybe he was exposed to ambulance chaser commercials.
BTW, no disrespect to Mr. Olsen.

Being a 49'ers fan, I hated the Rams.
But, 74 was amazing. He was part of one of the best front fours in NFL history. Deacon Jones, Rosey Grier, and Lamar Lundy. I saw him play at the Coliseum many times...Roman Gabriel to Jack Snow!

MO also owned a Porsche/Audi dealership among other successes, right off Slauson and the 405 Fwy, IIRC. A real renaissance man.
Here's a great article about him from 1986; really shows insight into who he was: Reading Eagle - Google News Archive Search

Merlin Olsen was a beast on the field. A fine gentleman, intelligent, kind and philanthropic. I doubt there is anyone playing today who is his equal. I was a 49ers fan, and still liked Mr Olsen. I wonder if John Brodie had nightmares about the Rams D line. |
