I used to have a Yamaha enduro 360 (RT2?) when I was in college. I rode that thing everywhere. They come up for sale every once in a while around here. I'd like to have my old one back. I sold it to my brother-in-law, but he never paid me.

Here's a good article on one just like my old one:

You and me both I saw a '78 DT400 (monoshock) on craigslist for $500 today, but the ad was old and the bike is most likely sold.

That mono DT400 is a gnarly animal. Rode my buddy's decades ago - unforgettable. Acres of torque. Good balance, nice bike.
I owned a Hodaka Road Toad 175 that had torque enough for me.
I bid on a mint DT400 on ebay 5 yrs. ago...it went for $4k plus.
Less than 500 miles, all original papers, manuals, original tires - a jewel!
Good luck & post photos.

Got any pictures? I swear, that was the first bike I ever lusted after. A grade school friend had one; we were probably 7-8 at the time. A year or two later, my constant pestering finally convinced my dad to buy a few "dirt bikes" for family fun. We ended up with a Honda MR50, a Yamaha GT80, and a Yamaha DT175 (for Dad).

The DT175 was the first "adult" bike I ever rode, and I thought it was a BEAST! Hence my nostalgia.

(sorry for the mini-hijack, 72 four door )

First bike I got when I got back/out. 1969 DT1, looked like this right before the Elsinore Grand Prix mud bath. I finshed 18th in my class but the bike never looked that good again.

heres the gig.......................ask me how i know.................

you will play holy hell finding anything old thats cheap that runs decent

anything old will be a POS.

anything old UNLESS RESTORED will be a POS

pay the money upfront for a concours or better bike.

why you ask? when you hit the wall at 200mph every single day night for a few months finding parts.............your GOOD BUY THEORY will be out the freeking window.

20 year old restorations not so bad.

30+ year old restorations.........................hang on to yer ass.

now if yer a total MORON and think i dont know what the hell im talking about, buy that "good deal cheap" and get on the thang and go ride it 50 miles away from your house truck and trailer and then write me all about yer mis adventures walking back becuz it BROKE!

replace everything. details count big time. see it takes 100 - 1%'s to make up 100%. sweat the small stuff. replace swingarm bearings wheel bearings rebuild shocks or replace replace steering head bearings grease brake pivots new fork seals new fluids new plug wire and cap and points and on and on and on...........and you will have something reliable. and if yer cheap and ya dont crack the case............wanna beat yer crank seals will take a POO.

if yer a cheap ass.........................this or any restoration could quite possibly turn into yer worst nightmare.

why beat yerself up with a really old dt-1.....................get yerself a IT with monoshock 175 250 465. i owned the 175 and the 250 and the 175 was wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy more fun because how light it was. and it too can be made street legal and parts are wayyyyy easier to find.

im loosing count on how many i have done or helped on.

and there is nothing worse aside from jumping in front of a train than breaking down 50 miles into BFE with nothing.

DT's are hard to find, good ones are like hen's teeth. Here's three early tuning forks that I found on the PDX Craigslist, and I think the old IT would have the most potential for fun. (Makes that CT175 look like a toy.)

But I'm no expert.

(Oddjob - that damn Jackpiner is a work of art.)

Yamaha DT 175 H

1981 Yamaha IT 175

1973 CT1 175 Yamaha Dual Purpose Street/Dirt Good restorable condition

do you realize HOW MANY BEERS THAT DAMN THING HAS TAKEN?

there IS NO DIFFERENCE btwn restoring planes cars bikes street or dirt.

they are ALL a HUMONGUS PITA!

basket cases?????????? ie. parts spread to high hell motors spread to high hell............NEVER FREAKING AGAIN!

if it aint at the least a "ROLLER" with all the basic parts intact .............RUN AWAY!

should you powdercoat or paint???????????????

well if yer gonna race it i would paint it and ya have easy repairs.

if yer gonna set it in yer lil museum and jerk off onto it i would powdercoat. powdercoat is a giant PITA to repair when wasted.

either way if yer gonna ride the damn thing which in actuality is WHY THE HELL YA BOUGHT THE DAMN THANG IN THE FIRST PLACE...............i would use 3M clear bra adhesive on any areas that will get hit by rocks or scuffed by boots or yer knees.

because after spending the amount of time and beer on these thangs it will KILL YOU as much as getting a herky assed rock divot in yer new freshly painted porschen hood.

these really do turn into labors of love. or hate as i can attest to back in 2001 when i walked away in TOTAL DISGUST from that freeking penton when we found way more bad stuff wrong and spendy than i cared to tackle at the time.

it took a heap of money time sweat equity beers and balls to tackle it again.

trust me a sharpie and zip lock bags will become yer friend on these restos.

if it does not have all the DOO DADS on it ......................RUN AWAY!

if anyjuan interested in a 1972 ROLLER PENTON JACKPINER 175 with chrome rims(1972 only) black KTM EVIL MOTOR about 93% all there does not run, i dont know of internal engine condition, that i paid $1100 bucks for back in 2000, i will sell it for same $1100 bucks or i can be inticed to LOWER my price by COLD CORONAS AND LIMES! short production numbers, faster than hell(would belly up with 250's), parts available thru penton owners group and pentonparts.com. these are very easy to street legal and terrorize yer neighbors and fellow campground campers! LOL! UNREAL WOODS/DEZERT WEAPON!

seriously thou..................any of the big 5 honda/kawi/suz/yam/ktm(penton) restos are fairly fun to do. any other mfg of dirty bike excluding husqvarna....................seriously consider HARI KARI before doing them unless in a extremely good running condition.
