Heading to AZ-spring training
Need to burn the moss off our backs. Be down there 11 days.
Best things to check out??...enjoy??...learn?? We are going to do a drive up through Prescott to check it out as a possible retirement area on the way to the Grand Canyon. Scout around the Canyon, stay overnight there and do some more exploring the next day prior to heading back south to baseball. What else?....well, besides baseball and some golf. Thanks,

Welcome to AZ.
I'm guessing you are planning to stay in the PHX area for the spring training. Tucson has a couple of teams as well and its only a 2 1/2 hour drive away. I spent 5 days & nights looking at property in Prescott this year. Prescott has some excellent REO/bank owned values. Prescott Valley has similiar weather and the home values are 1/3 of Prescott. I focused on Prescott. Go on CraigsList and get a daily listing of current for sale, REO, bank owned, pre froclosure....properties from many RE agents. Prescott has a forum similiar to Pelican: Prescott Forum - Relocation, Moving, Local City Discussions - City-Data Forum I like the historic Hassayampa Inn. Get the Romance package. The room and meals are a great deal. Location is nice if you want a drink on Wiskey Row. Bird Cage is interesting. Many to choose from. Prescott Brewery Company has decent food and many micro brews. Phoenix and surrounding area, too much to list and enjoy the games.

I live in Prescott Valley, and the first I will tell you is SLOW DOWN!!!!
Friggin Photo Radar is everywhere. Lots of unmarked cop cars, cop vans and cop Chevy Tahoes. Besides that, some of the worst drivers I've ever seen, and I've driven all over the country and Europe. Now for the pluses..... I'm thinking...... hmmmm......

It won't work on the stationary units, as they run on wires in the pavement. I can ride up to about 90 mph between them on the bike, but can't get around them in a car. Don't worry. All cameras have warning signs well in advance. The mobile units run on Ka band, but it's pretty weak, so you won't hear it until it's almost too late. Just watch the signs and you'll end up slowing down with everyone else and the speeding right back up. And if you get nailed, don't worry - they can't do anything to non-AZ residents for tossing the tickets. Few AZ residents bother paying them too.

We liked the vibe in Prescott. Had a fun evening on Whisky Row, but the town goes to bed by 9:00pm. Very sleepy. A person would need some serious hobbies if he were to retire there.
+1 on the Hassayampa Inn—but watch out for those paper thin walls. We were reminded of the line from The Big Chill "...there's a lot of fecking going on...". You don't just hear the people fecking next door, you hear them in three dimensions!

Not around PV! There are unmarked cop vans parked on the side of the road with no warnings sign at all. The only way to spot them is the tall antenna sticking up about 15 feet from the van. Lots of motorcycle cops literally hiding behind the bushes with radar guns aimed. OK....One pretty cool thing about Prescott....Lots of car stuff going on almost every weekend. Not so much Porsche events, but StreetRod shows and cruises all the time. You see Rods everywhere. My 40 Ford fits right in. ![]() ![]()

Holy F, you guys were not kidding about all the radar...unmanned that is.
I never once saw a car or motorcycle running radar, only the drones and portable. My wife got snapped at an intersection for going 10 over through it....I guess. On Olive road in Surprise, pretty much in the middle of nowhere but a bunch of fields. Had a great trip, 7 baseball games, 2 rounds of golf, Prescott, Jerome, Sedona, Grand Canyon and I can't even calculate my wife and daughters shopping total from Scottsdale. Prescott has been determined to be too far from the excitement for retirement. Looking for places now closer to Phoenix area.
