Javelina hunting in Texas, AZ, etc. info...

Hi guys, I don't frequent here as much as I used to, but immediately thought of asking here first :). Earlier today, my uncle asked me if I would look online for info regarding Javelina hunting in TX or the southwest. A quick search pulled up several sites, but I figured I'd run it by the PPOT braintrust. My uncle is a master woodsman/hunter so these ride 'n shoot "trophy sites" aren't what he's about at all, and my gut tells me he's looking more for a "place" and may not even desire a guide, but we didn't go into those specifics (yet) other than he's open to either rifle or bow (and he's extremely proficient with either). He used to hunt/guide in Alaska many years ago, and has harvested his share of Alaskan brown bear, black bear, moose, mtn. goats, sheep, elk, etc. and generally passes on dozens of opportunities to harvest whitetail each year here in NC while holding out for that "special buck" (just to give an idea of what he's all about). Any info you guys could pass along would be most appreciated. One other thing, he's specifically looking for javelina, not hogs/boars this time around. Thanks a bunch, and I'll check back on this thread within a few days if not sooner.

Well if he's driving thru central Mississippi on his way to Tejas I can probably arrange a wild hog hunt...you want with or without dogs?:D Can't help you on javalinas tho;)

Go to Az game and fish website, they have a good bit of info on Javi's. Most are southern units, hunts between jan and mar. For a real thrill, find an abandoned mine w/ alot of tracks around...go to the front and blow a varmint (rabbit in distress) call. When you hear them coming out, try to get a shot...oh and not gored by their tusks. PM Oddjob uno...he'll set you right. Good luck...an absolute gas to hunt w/ a bow.

It depends on where he is going to hunt. Some of the southern counties are year round, the northern regulations are from Oct 1 to Feb. 28. There are only 93 of 254 counties where you can hunt them, period. The good news is, he can shoot them out of helicopters, I think. I know non native hogs can be hunted from choppers, ie. russian boar hogs, not sure about Javelinas. Check this site out....

I'm cracking up here, and I had a pug as a kid! Thanks all for the feedback. Jim, I appreciate the offer, but if he wants hogs, I'm sending him to Fayetteville AR, Dickson St. at 2 am...easy pickin's :). I think John's pic confirms what my uncle told me in a brief conversation...those "dogs" populate like bunny wabbits and are overpopulated "pests" on many large ranches in TX. Keep the suggestions coming...I appreciate it!

like said above^...

call the AZ fish and game. see if they have any leftover peccory tags. you can buy one at their office in tuscon (or any other office) and go hunting. i didnt buy one, but a friend did. we simply went on public land...there are millions of acres of the stuff. there is a fishing/bowshop there. owner is jesse. he is so friggen helpful to anyone that simply walks in. (chinese) dude that can hunt! you should see his couse deer. i have his card at home, if you need the store name. (something like sequaro archery). anyways he pointed us in the right direction. drove out during a deer break, climb one hill, glassed, found them, checked wind direction, stalked them and TWACK! those things are difficult to kill. friend stabbed it with 3 carbon expre$$ arrows. it's friends surrounded it to protect it. amazing. if you find them, i think they are easy to stalk.

Thanks again everyone...I need to get back w/ my uncle and get more specifics on what he's after (time of year, no guide, etc.). I do know he'd prefer stalking over a helicopter though :)! I'll check back in a day or so, so keep the suggestions coming...

do it. i could probably get you a google map coordinate on where we found our pig.

You need OddJob to chime in here. He does this all the time...

BTW - they are smart, social and mean little muthas - don't shoot one and get trapped by a group of angered javelina

I got back in contact with my uncle, and he and a couple of hunting buddies are wanting to go "sooner, rather than later", so I assume that would mean one of the "year round southern counties" (either TX or AZ). I saw OJJ's post re Minutemen, and wonder if it's safe for some non-locals to even consider right now??? Vash, your tip about the public lands, and the "helpful" Jesse are along the lines of what my uncle is looking for...when you get a chance, could you get his contact info. Are public lands available in southern TX? Thanks again everyone!
