Re-using Billy Mays

Oxiclean commercial with images of Billy Mays in the background. Doesn't it seem wrong to use him in a commercial, now he's dead? I'm not talking about re-running old commercials. They have slipped his image into the new commercials, kind of ghost like.

One would assume the producers cleared this with May's family/next of kin, and they are receiving payment for using his likeness as a result.

However, in TV, bad taste is just but a small distance from merely "okay".

I do hope they muted the audio though.

As Sherwood pointed out, he does still have a family to support.. Pretty strong that after he is dead, he can still earn money for his wife & kids..

What about those rock band game commercials on a few months ago with all the computer-spliced in versions of John Lennon in them. Creep-tastic.

Hollywood blends dead actors into new movies. Watch for "This is it II" next year

Billy was 40% of my former partners income. Day Billy died my partner grieved for more than one reason.

Lot of "stuff" wrapped around the guy. Not so easy to untangle sometimes.

Who knows, his contracts could have clauses that allowed the family to force his image being used or other way around.

red-beard 03-16-2010 05:35 PM

That is an interesting thought.

i still have a very rough time VIZUALIZING him as a party animal.

red-beard 03-16-2010 07:31 PM

Remember what Bill Cosby said about cocaine:

"Well what is does, is intensify your personality"

"Yeah, but what if you're an ***hole?"

Also have a difficult time with the wife saying "I never knew a thing about his doing this" after they had been married this long. Not that it would change anything but would be really surprised to find out that it was not BOTH of them partying together instead of just him.

What about Mr. Clean ads?

phoenix_iii 03-17-2010 05:53 AM

What about the Popcorn guy? (Spelling) Reddenbocker... been abusing him for quite some time.

and Dave Thomas for Wendy's, has come back a few times.

I think it's okay. If they really loved/were passionate about their business or promotions, they would be okay with it, and if royalties are paid, that's fine too.

One that got me was the dead John Wayne in a beer commercial. Quit drinking that particular brand of beer after that.

ODDJOB UNO 03-17-2010 06:03 AM

CHE GUEVARRA! no poo! the most widely used logo/image around the world along with the logo/image of bob marley.

red-beard 03-17-2010 06:27 AM

I actually don't have an issue with them using the whole ad, but this was his faded image, like it was a ghost against a wall.

Seriously? Sounds like poo poo to me

I would have thought Coke was the most widely known brand/logo/image.

ODDJOB UNO 03-17-2010 08:09 AM

you obviously have not traveled much in your lifetime. no poo poo, the most widely recognized around the world symbol/logo is che guevarra. and then bob marley. stalins logo ranks up there also.

diabetic supplies direct to your door, wilfred brumley,

and in KC, there is a fire and brimstone preacher who stroked out years ago, but the band plays on.

...and then there's Col. Sanders.

Mays was responsible for a lot of those products he pushed seeing the light of day, and they fell under an umbrella company he had along with some other partners. I think not just him, but his company and estate have a vested interest in his image still being attached.

Wilford Brimley is still kicking, maybe you're thinking of Richard Farnsworth
