I don't put too much stock into these rankings. Having run a dealership service department years ago, I have to say that most new car buyers are idiots and I wouldn't trust their opinions much. Most never even read their owner's manuals.

And, when's the last time JD Power interviewed you about your experiences? Their sample size is probably not ideal. It's kind of like the various valuation services (KBB, NADA, etc.) getting some of their data from dealers. They never talked to us, or any other dealer that we knew....

Whether you put stock in it or not, a #1 ranking is still a good selling point. And people do pay attention to JD Power. In all, I think JD Power is fairly spot on for the average consumer.

My wife wants a Land Rover, been putting her off..... last in dependability, DON"T THINK SO, was wondering how many miles are put on Porsches vs Toyota, etc. Being #1 on that survey sure can't hurt

'99 and newer Porsches are designed to hold together very well until their warranties run out.

People AND the auto companies. When I worked with our automotive group the Bonneville which was made in GM's Buick City plant was ranked last or near the bottom one year. Well... All the suppliers got called in and we were friggin' trashed, called names, parts thrown at us, etc. Not pretty. I'll put it this way. I'd much rather supply parts to an assembly plant rated numeral uno vs. numeral 100.

Working for Benz, I can tell you that car markers value what JD Power publishes. It may not necessarily be fair and unbiased, but a good JD Power rating does help sell cars. Why do you think so many car ads feature a blurb about "Ranked #1 in JD Powers _________ survey?"

Mainly because the average car buyer is as savvy as a turnip. John Q Public is getting dumber by the minute and has reached a point where he cannot make a decision for himself; he has to have someone tell him what to do.

I am trying to sell a car to a guy in Canada. It has to conform to certain regulations, one of which is Canada's bumper standard. There are exactly 2, count 'em, 2 parts in a US version of this car that are different in a Canadian car, when it comes to the bumper assemblies. The idiot bureacrat in question has been provided with a letter from a Canadian dealer that identifies these two parts, backed up by supporting drawings and parts lists for both cars, so that he can see for himself what the differences are. HE IS STILL ON THE FENCE AND WON'T ACCEPT THE CAR.

That kind of stupidity is hard to deal with.

Not sure I agree with that. Yes JQP has to do their homework but when the marketers and sales people get finished with you you do feel like a turnip. An example of marketing

"The first EVER G6 from Pontiac." Like it's a big friggin' deal. It was so awesome Pontiac is dead.

On the other hand if JQP believes that crap they deserve what they buy. So I guess I am agreeing with you!

Barrack Obama, rated number one in a 2008 nation wide survey as "best in class".
Smartest, blackest, coolest and let's not forget "able to leap tall building in a single bound" and a true patriot.
I guess that survey missed on all counts but one.
