That Maroon colur you are refering to was popular in the 1920's in the American Sarouks..which is a bast@rdization of a traditional design. They lost favor in the 60's xcept in the European market, but even that has fallen out in recent years. To achieve that Maroon colour they had to paint on the dye to get rid of the brick red colour. BTW I have one of those to.

Karastan? No way, that crap you bought is some old rug made by hand. Look at the pattern, its not symmetrical as a fine karastan!

HUH???? My rug is a Kashan...and looking at the back it is hand loomed, and if I am not mistaken because they are hand loomed they are not exactly symetrical. This Kashan is not an old rug.

Karastan on the other hand is an American company making machine made rugs...LOL at U...so you are exactly right in that respect...

To be considered to be an expert on this fking things, it requires that you know from which village a rug comes from. I ani't never goan get to that...

First they are new rugs, second none of them are all silk..either the foundation is cotton or they use another material with the silk to weave them ( Ican be corrected on this last point). For some reason Persian rugs are real cheap in the market place...I suspect that container loads of them are being brought in...I would take a good look at the back of these rugs and see if they are tightly woven...you can do some homewrik by looking at some of the internet rug dealers and comapring prices and looking at the pictures of the backs..I suppose if you liked them I would want to pay less than the low estimate out the door...so 4 to 4.5 bills is about max.

Also one begins to suspect where some of these rugs are being made..Egypt, Turkey, Pakistan, India or are they indeed from Iran.. but if they are being used as home decoration and not paying an collectable/investment price who really cares..I can certtainily say the Kashan I have is a very well hand made wool rug.

With regards to the Kashmar...the fringe is white which indicates that it is newer. However the stitiching along the long sides shows a bit of fraying in a couple of spots...one would think that on any older rug that they would be some wear and tear that would be consistant with age and use..however for the dinero paid it is not a biggie...

This is a Kashmar Flower and vase design that sold for 3k several years back..I would date this one as being 1920's or early 30's note the Burgundy colouring...this was a period affectation...size is 4 X 6

We have bought carpets from this auction (Empire) before, so I did study a little. He appears to have a constant supply. They source from Iran - Isfahan, Nain, Qum, Kashan etc. They mark the Turkish & Egyptian as such.

But I agree that they are new. The best we have bought is a tribal: a ~8 x ~11 Kerman. The pattern is twisted, the edges aren't straight & it weighs a ton, but it is indestructible. It was an absolute steal at $275. My great great grand kids will probably be crawling on it.

These look neither fine nor silk from the rather bad photos you have posted.

There are all silk rugs around, but these are relatively rare. You can tell if they are all silk only from handling them and looking at the back»as Tabs suggests. Not from pictures.

Also the size of these things is so small that they might make good floor-mats in your mini van—but not much else.

Buying rugs is one of the largest and best organized con-games around IMO. There are hardly any buyers out there who know what they are buying, and most buyers pay massively too much.

Never ever spend serious money on a rug without doing a lot of reading first.

Have no fear, I am not buying as a collector so I would never spend thousands. I need a rug or a small pair for a wall hanging in a specific spot - for acoustical reasons. A tapestry would be ideal but they are spendy - so I watch for carpets too. I passed on the auction anyway to prepare for dinner with my spawn. I am cooking a T-Bone roast. :D

I'd suggest looking locally. Befriend an Iranian dude, one that has an interest in, and knowledge of, rugs and let him be your guide. Always buy good quality and try to buy vintage if you can. You want something that's going to go up in value.
