Lost my dog

Foggie had been with us since 1994 when she was 2 years old. She was the smartest, kindest, and most gentle hearted dog I have ever known. At 18 years old, her hearing and sense of smell were nearly all gone. Her sight was suffering. Her rears legs showed signs of arthritis and her kidneys were causing her to become dehydrated, despite the amount of water she drank (which always went right through her). She would no longer lay down outside and would constantly walk in circles and she made a habit of messing in the house in her old age. Despite all this, there would be times everyday when she would act like a puppy... Barreling down the front hall at the idea of getting fed... Jumping up and down steps two at a time to get out and in. She even still looked like a puppy. This is why the decision to put her down was so tough. I cared for her most in her old age so the decision and ordeal was particularly tough on me. My family could not stay through to see the whole thing but I needed to. I wanted to be the last one she saw, not strangers. Foggie stopped breathing in my arms yesterday afternoon. She was very loved and will be missed. After 16 years I can't believe she's gone. Rest in peace, Foggie

She's beautiful and was very obviously well-loved, Brian.

Sad to see an old friend go.

You gave her a very good life one that was full of love. She could not have asked nor wanted anything more than you gave her. She would have said thank you for giving me a wonderfull life. May God rest her soul and her memory be long in your heart.

She was a beautiful dog. My dog, Kelly is 14 and even though she still hikes and fishes with me every weekend, I know that day is approaching and I've been really spoiling her the last few years. Smart dog too, brings me my shoes and her leash when its time to go potty. When I'm reeling in a fish she jumps in the water and tries to get 'em as I'm reeling them in, funny.

Sorry to hear about the loss of a great friend and family dog.

So sorry to hear it and unfortunately, I know exactly how you feel. I had to do the same thing in Jan. 2008 with my beloved dog. He was only 8 years old and I got him as a puppy. It was horrible. The only consolation is that you gave that fine animal a great life here on earth, as good as a life as she could possibly have had. Nice and long too, for a dog, although I'm sure that it flew by for you.

On a side note, what an attractive family you are!

Brian, I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. My condolences to you and your family. You did the right thing by staying with her and to the end.

You & your family have my sympathy. There is nothing that gives so much & demands so little in return as your dog. While us people might think we are teaching them so much with a "Sit" or a "Here", it is our dogs who have so much to teach us.

My hopes are that, when the time is right, another pup will come along & share in the joys of your family.

Sorry to hear this. But it sounds like she had a very good run.

She really looked part of the family. It took me 7 years to get a new puppy after my last dog died simply because I didn't want to go through the agony of losing one.
Wonderful family you have there.

Sounds like a life worth celebrating. . .but it just doesn't feel that way right now. She will always be with you.

Sleep well sweet Foggie.

She looked like a nice little hound. It sounds like she had a great and long life! That is a credit to her people....

It gets easier, it just takes time.

Sorry for your loss.

My German Shepard Samson lost his battle to lymphoma a little over a week ago, so I know what you are going through.
