congratulation or commiseration?
Dear Abby:
My older brother is 57 years old and on his 4th marriage to a 45 year old woman who is as charming as she is adorable. She has one son from a previous marriage who is already out of the house and doing stellarly well in Silicon Valley... He has four children—all of whom are in university. They have just discovered that she is pregnant. I can't believe he wants to do this, but he seems to be quite happy about it, and claims that it will "keep him young". The warning light on my instrument panel keeps flashing "abort", "abort", "abort"—but I don't want to interfere with my brother's misguided (IMO) sense of the happiness that awaits him. He's a big boy and money is not an issue. At least not yet. Should I shut up and put up— or should I be honest about my views on this impossible peccadillo? Confused in Carmel. |

Jesus H Christ, I forgot the most important fact in that post:
The new wife is pregnant. (original post amended) So I have just been told. |
Kill the baby! But don't torture terrorists.
It's a life people, a human life. A little baby. It isn't something you can throw away for convenience. The time to be thinking about whether you want a baby or not should be done before you make the baby, not after. |

What could possibly go wrong..... I think the author's brother needs a little wall to wall counseling. |

Now, back to the thread. He'll be what, 75? She'll be 63 when this kid graduates HS? Not for me, personally, but it takes all kinds to make a world. All you can do is be supportive of his choice. |
sammy just needs a personality transplant. :p
Kids are cool. I'd offer congrats. |
IMO they should've bought a lap dog.
But, in lieu of said lap dog, I suppose a BABY is a fine substitute, if you're CRAZY. Good on them, but to be honest I think the only way they'll make it at that age is if they can afford a live-in nanny or an au pair. Mom will be menopausal during the terrible twos, for example. |
keep your mouth shut - babies are rad.

Besides the fact that she is too old for your brother (thanks, Moses, for a genuine guffaw), I think a review is in order:
- 4th marriage. I'm no naysayer, but flying Dash Four in a flight of four is usually not a sign of excellence. Will he/she actually go the mile for this kid? The only thing worse than old parents is divorced old parents. I know some people make it work: they are the exception. - Birth Control. The prospective mother and father didn't noodle that little item through, left it to bonne chance? Fish gotta swim, but, put a tent over the circus. - Any other Children? I'm thinking the fertile crescent(s) have a passel... I have nothing other to say than should I ever find myself in your OB's situation, I'm raising the child, because it is a child, right now. |
57 yrs old, on his 4th marriage, and he's still shooting live bullets (i.e. no vasect)????
Dude. |
