Gas clothes dryer vs. electric

I may have to switch to a gas clothes dryer to make room in the breaker box for an AC system. Never had a gas dryer before and it sounds scary. Is it? Never had to worry about an electric dryer.

Usually. Some parts of the country, like those in the TN area, electricity can be really cheap.

Here in Houston, the cost to to run the Gas Dryer is 1/3rd of Electric.

Clean the lint screen and vent outside, not to the garage.

Bought a dryer last fall and went with gas. No problems. No kablammo. The only PITA part was venting of the dryer, as it's no longer acceptable to use flexible ducting due to fire hazard concerns. Some sort of metal periscope-like box is required which is nigh impossible to find. So I just used the flexible ducting and will clean it out annually. Or whenever I remember.

Sometimes, late at night, when you're asleep, they tip-toe into your room and try to smother you.

Other than that, I've used both. Like Gas much better.

Before spending hundreds on a gas dryer, have you checked out tandem breakers?

We use em when we need to add some space in a cramped panel. They also come as quad breakers for your 240 volt loads. So long as the panel itself isn't near the limits of it's ampacity you should be fine.

I very much want to run a gas line to the laundry room. In the mean time the electric dryer is doing the job while the gas dryer sits in storage.

I would recommend using metal venting. The flexible venting traps lint and could retain enough heat to melt the plastic. You can get 30 gauge aluminum venting at any hardware store.
