what level of ripeness do you like to eat bananas?

just had a chick flip out on me because i had a brown spot on my banana..WTF? brown isnt cool?

masraum 03-31-2010 11:09 AM

Just beginning to get brown spots is fine, lots of brown spots is too sweet and too squishy for my taste. I can also eat them with no brown and a tiny amount of green, but prefer them about half way in between green and brown.

dd74 03-31-2010 11:11 AM

Green to nearly covered in brown. If they turn to goo while in my grasp, I toss them.

On the peel or the edible part? I imagine you meant the latter.

That's a typical chick reaction to something like that... "ewwwwwwwww, gross."

It may also be why they live longer than we do. :D

Yep

TSNAPCRACKLEPOP 03-31-2010 11:26 AM

just read up on this because i eat so many for the potassium value. no i read that as they ripen, it increases the amount of dextrose and fructose sugars, of which the fructose (as in high fructose corn syrup, HFCS) levels go up, which contributes to joint pain. I am switching to kiwi and cantalope, which contain about 1/3 the fructose sugars.

peppy 03-31-2010 11:28 AM

I tried putting them in the cooler in the restaurant to extend shelf life....it works but they turn black and customers freak out. They taste fine and are not squishy they just look like they are rotten.

The ripe ones make the best milkshakes.SmileWavy

My wife freaks about a spot on a banana.

I like the ones you get in the tropics that are tree ripened.

rattlsnak 03-31-2010 11:30 AM

all yellow with tiny amounts of green being ok, but no brown... ewwwww.

That's what I do at home after they begin to turn a bit cuz Miz Toe won't eat them once there is a certain spotty look to the peel.

After putting them in the fridge, they last a good bit longer. I imagine they'd last even longer if we put them in as soon as we bought them... but the peels would turn dark sooner, too.

They have shots for that...

gr8fl4porsche 03-31-2010 11:36 AM

Just had a banana for lunch.

If they don't have a little green on them then they're already too ripe for me.

Seahawk 03-31-2010 11:37 AM

Banana bread.

I agree with DD74, though I prefer a few brown spots so that they are sweet. Any green and they are a little tart for my liking (but I will still eat them). All brown and they go in the freezer for a future loaf of banana bread.

targa911S 03-31-2010 01:23 PM

I had a dozen banana trees when I lived in FL. They were little ones but sugar sweet. when they would fruit we made banana everything. I like em every way but green, Love em fried. Plantains are great too especially fried with brown sugar.and a little whipped cream.

onlycafe 03-31-2010 02:44 PM

as it says on packaging; "serving suggestion."

peel and freeze, chocolate dip optional.

slice and cover with cinnamon sugar and torch burn 'til sugar caramelizes.

bananas foster.

sliced on cereal.

OK, as per proper PPOT etiquette you need to mention that in the original thread so we're not left wondering.

A930Rocket 03-31-2010 03:34 PM

Had two today.

I like them with a little green to spotty brown. Used to not like the bruises, but have gotten over that, (unless it's mush.).

Taste great on sandwhiches with mayo and peanut butter.

Super_Dave_D 03-31-2010 04:45 PM

I am a number 5 - 6 guy at the most. Number 7....forget it!!

#4-5 for me. How could you even eat #1? I don't think you could peel it!

Any spots on your banana probably aren't cool :D

imcarthur 03-31-2010 06:41 PM

#7 would have the most flavor. 6 or 7 for me.

Embraer 03-31-2010 06:42 PM

based on the picture above, i will eat anywhere in the range of 1-7. if it went to 8, i'd probably eat that, too.

i have a coworker who freaks out with any signs of brown on his banana. if i feel like being a jerk, after i see him put his lunch in the fridge, i'll take the his banana out of the bag and give a few good whacks on the countertop in our breakroom....and then put it back in the bag. by lunch time, his banana is a nice dark brown.

911Gil 03-31-2010 06:53 PM

What do you do when he brings avocados or walnuts?;)

imcarthur 03-31-2010 08:07 PM

Isn't whacking another man's banana illegal in some states?

Ian
