I love them and will own another one. But no way am I paying a dime extra for some anniv. model. These bikes are made to be rode hard and put away wet. What's the point of buying some fancy anniv. model and they either riding it as it's meant to be ridden or letting it shine in the garage?

Rick,
Yes and no. Every once in a while you find the diamond in the rough. Good friend of mine in Casa Grande just bought a late 1980's R100GS, the "bumblebee" version. He found it on CL and bought it from the original owner. It had 3500 ORIGINAL miles and was in like new condition. Guy was not in good health and put it away years ago in his garage. Its really a time capsule bike... and he paid something like $4000 for it. Joe A

I am definitely not one of those time capsule buyers and I doubt the guy who sold that Bumble Bee made any money on it. I measure everything by my cost per mile to own. I sold my GS for $3k less than I paid for it and put 30k miles on it in 2.5 yrs. I call that a very reasonable cost of ownership for the amount of fun I got out of it. Buying an anniv. model, mothballing it and then selling it at a firesale price decades later is not my idea of fun ownership.

He was not worried about making money on the bike, he was more concerned about finding a good home for it, which he did.

I am perfectly happy with my plain old '08 R1200GS. I've looked at "second" bikes from time to time, but invariably get back on the GS and say, "why would I want to spend money on another bike?" ymmv.

Bought it Aug '08. Picked it up on a Friday afternoon, packed the top box and the g/f and I rode up to Laguna Seca. Sitting about about 16K miles at this point - been working too much the past year. I intend to keep this one for a long time. Need to plan (and execute) a few longer tours with the g/f this summer.

I'm 13 months into owning this one and have put 12k miles on it. I'm getting upset about my average falling below 1k miles per month.

Vash,
You are starting down a very slippery slope! Turn the computer off and do not look at Todd's reply, nor mine or Ricks. Go find something to watch on the tele...

If you want to go cross country, get a GS Adventure with the nine gallon tank. Having run out of gas in the desert in NV, I was then sorely tempted to ride straight to BMW of Las Vegas and trade my S in for a GSA. The fuel range on the GSA is the best of the whole brand, easily over 400 miles to a tank. Longest day I've done on my S is about 650 miles and that was tough on my butt. I did that much on the GS in torrential rain for the entire distance a few years ago. Man, that sucked. But, had it been nicer weather, I could have easily gone farther. BTW, their stock seats suck for long trips. Gotta get a Corbin or Sargent.

I just got a Corbin on mine and love it. That said, I am silly enough to ride 1000 mile in a day, and do it twice back to back...

Having had a regular GS, I also second Rick with the GS Adventure and the bigger tank.
I still prefer the more solid feel of the 1150 GS's to the newer lighter 1200 GS's. |
