Hearing study all day tomorrow

Tomorrow My son will be participating in a hearing study where he wears a vest that records every sound around him:eek:

I thought this was a great idea when my wife was going to be with him all day, but I am all by myself tomorrow. Did I mention that we are still trying to potty train him and he likes to make it BIG and he thinks its funny. Oh I am going to be so embarrassed about what will be recorded, I already feel like I have gas.

Well good news I don't think I passed gas or said anything ugly within range of the recorder.

I never thought that I would feel that uncomfortable being recorded all day like that.

Just curious, what is the objective with the vest? What are you trying to learn?

Stephanie they (UNC and the LENA foundation) are counting the words that deaf/hard of hearing children are being exposed to as well as normal hearing children.

I have been told that there can be hundreds of thousands of words that some children have a deficit of when they start school.

Definitely. My wife, who's a deaf ed teacher, has seen kids show up in kindergarten with one and 2 word vocabularies. Or middle schoolers with 10 word vocabs. ALL of those kids will be behind in school, some more behind than others. Her biggest accomplishment this year is getting one kid who's only deaf go from 2 years behind to 1 behind(so he can play sports). Both teacher and student have had to bust their tails to pass 2 EOG's in one year, but it's possible.

Just think about this if you've got kids. How many words to they hear versus how many do they see? That's half the issue in and of itself, just plain old exposure to words in general.

Tim that is one heck of an accomplishment for your wife and the child that made up that much ground in one year. It takes a certain kind of person to push a child like that.

Some parents just don't talk to their children, too bad they don't consider that abuse.

^This. You'd be amazed at how many parents CAN'T talk to their children because they never bothered the learn ASL/Cued Speach/etc.
