Thinking about getting roosters

As the thread title said, I'm thinking about getting some roosters - what do you guys think?

UconnTim97 04-03-2010 08:20 PM

Alarm clock not working?

HHI944 04-03-2010 08:33 PM

Roosters are great, as long as you don't mind the noise, being clawed badly enough to require stitches and having to feed an animal with absolutely no redeeming value unless you own hens............

Embraer 04-03-2010 08:36 PM

yeah...when i was little, we had roosters. aggressive. they left the earth via baseball bat

nynor 04-03-2010 08:56 PM

why get roosters?

Racerbvd 04-03-2010 08:56 PM

So you will be the cock of the walk????

Buckterrier 04-04-2010 04:59 AM

If you are serious I don't know why you'd want more than one. They'll just fight each other or you'd pretty much have to keep them separate. I have Elvis, my avitar, but I also have a few hens. The hens are happier and he does an awesome job protecting them. But I certainly wouldn't want more than one at a time. One roo can have up to 10 hens.a

Do you think I could create a Highly Trained Rooster Militia (HTRM)?

I'm thinking if I could get a HTRM, they could defend the cat and dog from coyotes. Maybe even get the HTRM big enough and rent them out to DD74 for security around his neighborhood?

I think the possibilities could be endless.

Good thing you didn't title this "thinking about getting cocks" or you'd draw all the wrong kind of attention. Not that the motley crew on here is the "right kind of attention" but just sayin'...

I would take an HTRM over coyotes any day. The problem being they would also fight amongst themselves. Elvis fends off my pups when they are trying to get the hens. It would be the ultimate fighting machine if they could be trained to work as a team.

For what purpose? They aren't really good for much.

Some friends in Tamarindo got roosters and put them in cages right next to their neighbors Bed and Breakfast because they didn't get along. I loved it and didn't like the people either, the guy screwed me on some rental time in my house.

Don't get roosters. Bottom line.

I had a rooster in my backyard today. Woke me up with his crowing. The neighbor said it was some kind of prank, that there was a hen and rooster. He said the dogs got the hen. Anyway, when I got home today, it was gone and it was quiet. Man, they make lots of noise.

We have 2 and a flock of 16 hens. The roosters need to be kept separate or they will kill each other. Our neighbor did our chores and unknowingly let out both roosters. When we got home from our vacation our favorite rooster, who was the alfa before we left, was tore up so bad we thought he was going to die. We are now nursing him back to health.

If you want 1, I have one you can have. He is a great fighter by the way but 1 on 1 he is pretty nice.

Speedy:)

Every now and then someone around here gets a rooster. You hear it for a few days, then you don't. Sometimes, if the wind is just right, you can hear the rifle crack. Plain nasty animal. I might get chickens in the not too distant future, but it would have to be TEOTWAWKI before I get some bird that could send me to the emergency room.
