World Capitals
As I get ready to move again this summer (back to GM :)), I started to wonder how many of the worlds capitals I'd visited....my count is only 20, but I know many of you make travel a professional sport. By far, the one farthest from most tourist destinations and really fairly different from the rest was Chisinau, Moldova. I'll have to dig then scan to post a picture, but anyone else been to an interesting capitol?

I visit my garage everyday. That is my capital and I am KING!
|
Best Capitol?
Washington DC in the spring. Actually very few I haven't been to in 35+ years of flying. |
|
Lived in 8 and visited another 94 countries so far. Still not finished... but its getting hard to find places that are easy to get to that I have not seen yet!
|
Sana'a now that's unique, and not one I'd place on my top 10, although I've often thought about visiting Yemen...just can't find a good reason. About 10 years ago I could have managed it, and with 20-20 hindsight, should have. Not very unusual, but nearby, Muscat Oman...spent a great week there (basically just killing time).

I've got a decent bit of travel exp, but not much compared to some of you. I love travel and wish my work had me travel more.
DC and Tokyo But I've lived in Japan for a bit over 5 years total, spent a couple of summers in Spain, visited Scotland (Aberdeen), Portugal, Tangier, Mexico, and Gibraltar. |
I haven't even been to OUR capital.
|

I have been to a dozen or so. The biggest surprise has been Budapest. I expected a grim communist era city but it constantly reminded me of Paris (which is my personal fav). Parks. Wonderful old buildings. The Danube through the middle. Great food.
Some pics - all taken from the Hilton Buda Hill - the morning & river pics were taken through a window. I'm in DC now for the first time in two years. Traffic is worse than in LA. Yes, really. Un'effing'real. However, the weather is nice today.
My list of capitals I've visited: Berlin (and Bonn when it was still the capital) Warsaw Kiev Prague Vienna Paris Beijing Brussels Wash. DC |

Love Budapest at night, especially during the holidays. Very nice place to be. You need to visit Prague as well. Not as nice with the river in the middle of town but beautiful anyway. Kyiv is as well... |

Muscat was very nice but if you want to see somewhere that really has not changed in a LONG time, go to Tripoli Libya. No food chains, no hotel chains and so on, its really like it was at least 50 years ago. The souks are excellent as well. Casablanca was fun and people were friendly, Algeria not as much so but still nice. Dar was ok but again a security issue that I do not need at my age. |
Off the top of my head:
London, UK Paris, France Amsterdam, Netherlands Brussels, Belgium Madrid, Spain Luxembourg City, Luxembourg Zurich, Switserland Vaduz, Liechtenstein Bonn, Germany (back in the East/West days, never been to Berlin) Monaco Ville, Monaco Prague, Czech Republic Vienna, Austria Athens, Greece Washington DC, USA Abu Dhabi UAE Tehran Iran Closer to home: Maputo, Mocambique Windhoek, Namibia Maseru, Lesotho Mbabane, Swaziland Nairobi, Kenya Dakar, Senegal Pretoria, South Africa Countries that I have visited in the past (some often), but for some reason always managed to avoid the capital cities: Canada Russia Italy Germany Zambia Zimbabwe (not sorry about this one) Countries/continents that I have managed to avoid completely in 30 years of travel, but still on my bucket list: Scandinavia, Far East, Australia, NZ, South America, Carribean. I will be visiting Israel in May this year. SmileWavy |

My list, IIRC:
Australia - Melbourne Bahamas - Nassau Belgium - Brussels Canada - Ottawa Egypt - Cairo England - London France - Paris Germany - Bonn (in 1995) Greece - Athens Holland - Amsterdam Hong Kong - Victoria (1994) India - New Delhi Italy- Roma Japan - Tokyo Maldives - Male' Mexico - Mexico City San Marino - City of San Marino Scotland - Edinburgh Spain - Madrid Switzerland - Berne Thailand - Bangkok Tunisia - Tunis Vatican - Vatican City Yemen - Sana'a Never been to the capital of these countries I've visited: Austria Turkey United Arab Emirates United States of America Observations: Sana'a was pretty neat, visited there when we lived in Aden for three years. On our first visit, one of the places we wandered around was the souk, chewing qat and chatting up the merchants. When we returned home to Aden we learned there had been a travel advisory for Sana'a - apparently pamphlets had been distributed throughout the very same souk the previous day, exhorting the locals to stab or otherwise smite any foreign infidels on sight. Probably the weirdest capital city was Male', capital of the Maldives - probably no more than about 80,000 population when we were there, and aside from buildings, no high point more than about 5 feet above sea level. My favourite was Rome, lived there for almost five years when I was a kid. Life changing experience. |
Ok, let's see:
ROK - Seoul Chinga - Beijing Japan - Tokyo US - Washington DC South Africa - Pretoria Moldova - Chisinau Hungary - Budapest Poland - Warsaw Czech Republic - Prague Croatia - Zagreb UK - London Spain - Madrid France - Paris Luxembourg - Luxembourg City Belgium - Brussels Netherlands - Amsterdam Germany - Berlin Romania - Bucharest Oman - Muscat forgot Bahrain, Bahrain Of these, my 3 favorites are 1. Prague, 2. Luxembourg City 3. Berlin The most interesting was Zagreb. Was there during peacekeeping missions, outside the coalition compound was a wall of unmortared bricks with pictures held down by the bricks. It was called the "wall of shame"; the pictures of people that died as a result of the coalition delaying the Balkan peace keeping mission (separating the 4 ethnic groups). |
Washington D.C.
Amsterdam Bangkok Bern London Papeete Paris Rome Vatican City |
