it hurts EXTRA when family rips you off..

sad..my poor wife's family is going thru this. bad jobless uncle is taking advantage of grandfather with dementia..and cleaning out the family account...

my wife is bummed. sucks to watch. no one on her dad's side even works, except her dad. the rest are jockeying, backstabbing, kissingbutt for the king's share of the ransom.

my aunt ripped my mom of a SF apartment near fisherman's wharf. seen it done..ugly.

At the head of the list, first few entries, that is, of the people that have ripped me off over the years family and "friends" are leading the way.
My fault, to be sure, but you think "it's family," or he's a "friend." And then we get burned.
Hope all goes well.

Welcome to my (ex) family. I could have gotten mine, but I relish sleeping good at night. I'm a firm believer in, 'What goes around, comes around.'

Like Westy said, Karma will come back around and visit you. What you reap, so will you sow... just do the right thing and keep heading in the right direction.

Sorry to hear. Karma will take care of things.

I have a simple rule for money with family and friends. There are no loans, just gifts. If i am not prepared to give, then no money. If they give it back, great, if not--none was expected.

For the life of me I don't understand this, but then again I do. I have been ripped off, abused and just plain disrespected by my family, including nephews. I've given this some thought and its probably selfevident. Family members are not like a bank. With a bank you are OBLIGATED LEGALLY to pay back the debt. Not so with family. There's this unspoken dynamic of 'He/she's family,he/she won't force me to pay it back. I'll just tell them 'I'm family' if they get a bit antsy'. I like to be generous-but where does it get you? Not that I have to 'get' anything, but you know what I mean? I loaned my brother-in-law a total of 65K(four lots of 15K) when he couldn't make wages(he's and engineer with 15 employees) I've been to his factory numerous times asking for the dough and he says "soon". Never again.

My grandmother died a while back, grandfather has Alzheimer's, lives in a retirement home.
My uncle and aunt already cleaned their house. Furniture, art, jewelry, all gone before my dad realised what was going on.
It stings 'cause it aint right.
After ganddad passes, I'll have a good reason to forget about those people, I'll erase them from my memory.
Maybe not the exact situation, but I know what you are speaking of.

this Karma thing, better be REAL!

my mom would be a millionaire if not for her sister. my mom is incredible..she still refused to break up the family. kept communications open. i can even call my aunt with out the beotch calling my mom, and saying, "cliff called, is he trying to kiss my butt for some inheritance?" WTF? personally, i hope she dies lonely and hated.

You can either sit by and let it happen or have gramps declared incompetent and set up a conservatorship. Not so much for the heirs but rather to assure assets are available to take care of grandpa's needs.

Not pleasant either way...but those are your options.

your not protecting your Mom /Grandpa..
that should be your goal..
wait on Karma or make Karma happen..
losing a X-mas were everybody is faking it..
is no loss..
so you either roll over as the others do..
and be quiet ....
or you start stepping on toes and bodies..

I have heard tragic stories from many elderly patients that would shock you. One woman, who had lived up the street from my in laws, was put out of her house and into a nursing home literally the same day she gave her daughter the keys to the kingdom, so to speak, so her family could "take care of her."

Tossed a brick through the window of her former home at her request, brought a smile to her face when I told her about it.

I've got very little family.... No siblings.... Cousin on my dads side is smart enough to not ask...

Cousins on my moms side realize that on the chance that hell froze over and I loaned them money... I'd put them 6ft under if they didn't pay...

Hate to sound cold... But I'd never let someone get away with taking me for 50k... family or not.... I'd get even somehow...

My 81 y/o MIL lives with us in part because a bipolar (I believe SIL) cleaned the MIL out of her life savings over the last 20 years. NONE of my wife's 4 bros and sis can be bothered coming by to visit her, and they all live within an hours drive. Yet in their eyes, my wife and I are the bad guys. POS inlaws.
